Located in the heart of red rock canyon country, Moab is minutes from Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, the world famous Slickrock Bike Trail, river rafting and cool mountains. With thousands of miles of jeep trails providing access to the most extensive catalogue of public lands in the lower fortynine States, explore a world carved from the drainage of the last Rocky Mountain uplift from the western slope of the Rockies to the Grand Canyon that was virtually unknown before the John Westley Powell expeditions of the late 1800's.
You drop down through several hundred million years of exposed geologic strata, pass Arches National Park, and cross the Colorado River into town. Moab is nestled in a sort of basin surrounded by red sandstone cliffs, fins and hoodoos (that's really a word). The most prominent feature is the Moab Rim to the west (not really a rim except for appearances) that frames that side of the valley going south,.. but not to be outdone, the east side of the valley stacks up over redrock and layers rising up to a collection of 12,000 ft. peaks of the La Sal Mountains. Whether you stay in town or south into the valley, you'll still be using a car to get around and to explore Moab's environs, because while there are innumerable canyons and mesas and mountains, National parks and Monuments, State Parks, BLM lands, National Forests, Colorado and Green River gorge, etc in every direction and nearby, the scale of it all is such that you need to do a little driving to get to trailheads and interact with the surround.
Wilderness abounds, but Moab is happening too,.. with restaurants that run the gamut from cowboy diners to fine dining, coffee houses, breweries, museums, art galleries, crafts & collectibles, cross country skiing, community pool, community parks, skate park, best small town library in the USA, supermarkets and natural food stores (but no Walmart or other super stores within a hundred miles), and a roster of seasonal events (world class music festival, folk festival, jeep safari, art walks, antique car rally, rodeo, rock & gem show, foot races, bike races and more).
