Manzanillo is increasingly popular and visitors come because it offers a more relaxed holiday and authentic Mexican experience than in more "touristy" Mexican resort towns such as Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. The local people are genuinely friendly, laid back, and greet visitors with warm smiles. There is also an absence of high-pressure sales pitches that can go along with the more jaded touristy areas of Mexico. The climate rivals the Hawaiian islands which lie at the same latitude, although Manzanillo is more reliably sunny in winter.
The weather does not vary a great deal year round with an average of 30 C in the day, and 22 C at night. Golfing is wonderful in Manzanillo and nearby Jalisco. There is a championship golf course (La Mantarraya) ten minutes away associated with the Las Hadas resort. It has been ranked in the top 100 courses in the world. There are two other world-class courses, the Grand Bay - Isla Navidad and El Tamarindo, within a 45 - 80 minute drive respectively. A public 9 hole course (Santiago) is 15 mins away. There are many fine restaurants in Manzanillo and surrounding areas. The food is remarkably safe to eat, with incidents of food-related illness ("Montezuma's Revenge") rarely reported. There are many wonderful restaurants in Manzanillo, including traditional Mexican, Italian, Japanese, International, and seafood. There are also a few fast-food (e.g., Burger King) if that is your preference. Selection of grocery items has improved quite dramatically over the last few years in Manzanillo. The main grocery stores are clean, bright, and have an excellent selection. A super-sized Wal-Mart has recently opened and sad to see in some ways, but has also increased food and other item selection. It is straight-forward to use debit cards, traveler's cheques, and credit cards. Inability to speak Spanish is rarely a problem, but the locals do seem to appreciate any effort whatsoever, with a combination of patience and humor. Car rentals and taxis are easily arranged. There are also many activities, including water sports of all varieties with many reasonably priced rental options, para-sailing, shopping galore, fun day trips, turtle sanctuary, and sight-seeing. The beaches in Manzanillo are safe, lovely, and rarely crowded.
