Things are about to change for this region of Spain. A large casino and gambling complex is being built, with all modern conveniences, including spas and top class accommodation. It will be easily accessible by road and will attract a whole plethora of new visitors to this region.
Up until now this largely unspoilt region of Spain has largely been the holy grail of fans of the intrepid Don Quixote. This book, the second best seller of all time – after the bible, has legendary status among its many fans. One of the attractions are the windmills that Don Quixote was supposed to have fought.
The geography of the region is arid and quite desert like but it has several distinguished towns and cities. Toledo, once the capital of Spain and also of Don Quixote fame, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city is the capital of the region and is truly amazing with its mixture of Moorish and medieval architecture that will take your breath away. Take a gambol down some of its narrow winding streets that will make you think you are in a different age, or spend a lazy afternoon drinking and eating in a restaurant beneath the city walls. It is worth spending a night or two here as the atmosphere in the evening after the most day-trippers have disappeared off is quite different to that during the day. It was also home to the legendary painter El Greco.
Another great place to visit is Cuenca. With its mixture of medieval architecture and splendid museums it is definitely worth taking the time to explore.
Whilst this region does not have the beaches and soaring mountains that a lot of other regions of Spain has, it is definitely worth a visit and is worth exploring from your holiday rental home.
