About Cantabria:

Cantabria Holiday Information and Travel Guide

This region of Spain is a little gem that is, as yet, largely undiscovered by foreign tourists – although it is quite a popular destination for the Spanish themselves. It is situated on the Northern Atlantic coast of Spain between Asturias and the Basque Country, with the Cantabrian Sea in front of it and the Cantabrian Mountains running through it!

It is an amazing region with stunning vistas and lush greenery all around. Within easy distance of the capital Santander is the Picos de Europa National Park beautiful scenery and plenty to attract even the most ardent nature lover. There are plenty of wonderful walks and hikes with all levels of difficulty (or ease) as well as good climbing terrain for those who are skilled and like to pit themselves against Mother Nature. The area is also popular with cavers as there are some pretty challenging and deep caves about.

The Altamira Cave is another of the jewels in the crown of this region with paintings that are reputed to date back thousands and thousands of years. Although due to the frailty of the paintings it is quite difficult to get into them these days they are reproduced in the museum at Santillana del Mar. Oh, Santillana del Mar why were you named thus? This is often called the city of three lies as it is not holy (santo), it is certainly not flat (llano) and try as you might you will find no mar (sea) here. However it is a truly beautiful little town with its cobbled streets and fantastic architecture and altogether captifying energy about it.

Santander, the capital of the region, is a bustling port city. The port is still very active and many ferries full of British tourists dock here to allow of their passengers who then generally flock further south to Spain’s better known resorts. However Santander has plenty to offer in itself and in fact Spain’s royalty used to holiday here to enjoy the sophisticated city and wonderful beaches and scenery of the area.

This part of Spain is definitely worth a visit for your holiday or vacation rental and will surprise you with its diversity of things to see and do.

Come on give it a go!
