The Canary Islands are a territory of Spain situated in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa. There are seven main islands: el Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. They are actually much closer to Africa than they are to mainland Spain and so it is perhaps not surprising that they have a wonderfully mild climate that makes them attractive to sun seekers all year round. El Hierro is the smallest of the islands but still has many stunning features. There are many marvellous rock formations and its volcanic past is there for all to see. The landscape is diverse with mountains, forests, cliffs and natural swimming pools such as the one at Tarmaduste. The capital of El Hierro is Valverde, which has plenty of lovely little restaurants. This island has a different character to that of the big four and is much quieter and more relaxed. The beaches are still lovely and of an interesting red colour.
La Gomera is a stunning little island. Despite the fact that it is volcanic in nature, it has been estimated that there has not been an eruption here in well over a million years. To that end there has been a chance for a topsoil to develop and it the vegetation is quite lush and beautiful. Despite the proximity of the equator and Africa the gentle winds and sea currents help make the climate a lovely, comfortable one. The island is largely unspoiled by mass tourism and has a tranquil, earthy feel to it. It has a national park, Garajonay National Park that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The vistas are beautiful and the villages and way of life remain largely undisturbed.
La Palma is also known as La Isla Bonita or Pretty Island. The climate is conducive to lush growth and one can see this reflected in the magical forests that cover parts of the island. It highest point is well over 2000 metres high and it is a wonderful place for hiking and trekking around. One can also tour the island by bicycle or horseback. Santa Cruz de la Palma, the capital, is a truly captivating little town with pretty houses and a very much intact way of life.
It is also gaining somewhat of a reputation amongst stargazers as the clarity of night skies off sets the twinkling of faraway stars.
The big four: Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife, all offer spectacular vistas and wonderful beaches. There are fantastic geological sites formed by volcanic eruptions through the ages as well as some of the most fantastic beaches to be found. The tourist industry is well developed on these islands and so there are many holiday villas throughout the Canary Islands and plenty of offerings including just about every water sport, theme parks, golf and all sorts of modern facilities. The big towns all offer plenty of lively entertainment, restaurants, bars and clubs and are a mecca for many a sun seeker.
However like most places, if you take the time to get off the beaten track there are plenty of places that offer a tranquil solitude and a more laid back way of life and it is well worth the time and effort to get out and explore a little bit – by whatever mode of transport you enjoy the most.
