About Basque Country:

Basque Country Holiday Information and Travel Guide.

The Basque country is made up of three main provinces: Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa and Alava. Euskadi as it is known also consists, at least culturally, of the region of Navarre and Rioja. The Basque country in Spain has a fair degree of autonomy, able to elect its own parliament and having a say in setting its own taxes. It is located to the south of France, on the Cantabrian Sea with the Pyrenees running through it. This makes for an absolutely stunning landscape with large rolling, green hills and mountains bordered by a beautiful coastline.

San Sebastian, in Guipuzcoa, is a beautiful city to visit. There is absolutely amazing architecture and the Old Quarter is a sight to behold day or night beautifully situated at the bottom of Mount Urgull. The city is located on La Concha bay and the beaches help create a wonderful atmosphere for San Sebastian. At lunchtime and towards the end of the day, office workers step across the road and make their way down to the beach to soak up the sun, before returning to their offices. Think of the wonderfully relaxed life that this would afford. Check out the San Telmo Museum and some of the other attractions in this wonderful city and enjoy a glimpse at a different way of life. It is littered with small bars and restaurants where you can enjoy some of the local delicacies.

Travel along wonderful mountain roads with one street towns' seemingly clipped to them and visit Bilbao in Vizcaya. This city is a modern day cultural revolution and has literally stamped its name on the map with some of its audacious projects. Perhaps the most famous of its many attractions is the Guggenheim Museum designed by the architect Frank Gehry with its stunning titanium sheathing which at any time will hold equally stunning artworks within its skin. Then there is the Santiago Calatrave footbridge, which has to be seen to be believed, and the subway system deigned by Sir Norman Foster.

Capital of the Basque Country is Vitoria, a splendid city situated on a vast plain surrounded by mountains. The old town here is a preservation area and one can wander, as though in a different age, through its narrow streets for many pleasant hours. Later take in one of its many parks or go shopping down a busy boulevard.

Not far away is Pamplona where the famous Running of the Bulls takes place. Pamplona is transformed for this event and it is truly a fiesta not to be missed.

Basque country is an increasingly popular destination for a holiday or vacation rental with so much to see and do.

From mountain scenery to city beaches it surely has something to offer even the most jaded traveller.
