Peniche is a rugged peninsula fringed with beautiful sandy beaches, just one hour's drive north of Lisbon, Portugal's vibrant capital city. At its centre, is the old walled town of Peniche with its marina, fort museum and historic churches. It's narrow cobbled streets are full of restaurants and cafes serving the delicious produce of the Estramadura region, including its wine, olives, cheeses and of course fish, the daily catch from Peniche harbour. Peniche is a centre for lace-making and a calendar of traditional festivals and carnivals are held annually.
There is a fabulous choice of beaches from the calm and family-friendly (Praia Norte) through to great body-boarding beaches (Baleal) and the famous surfing beach of Supertubos. Relax in one of the beachside bar/cafes or shellfish restaurants and watch the sun set. Excellent coastal paths can be taken around the peninsula for bird-watching and Atlantic views. The nature reserve of Isle de Berlenga can be reached by boat daily from Peniche marina.
A stay in Peniche makes a great holiday in itself, or use it as a base to tour daily the wonderful region with its many historic towns and villages such as Obidos, Caldas da Raina and Fatima. Lisbon and the palaces of Sintra also make good day trips. Many destinations can be reached by public transport.
