A perfect place to see Portugal's history – the town of Evora is practically an open-air museum, with so many sites of historical interest that it's listed as a world heritage site. A privately owned villa in Evora is a great way to step into the history of the country.

The city's most famous landmark is the Temple of Diana which dates back to the 2nd century. Built by the Romans, the temple now stands as one of the area's best preserved Roman monuments. The main square of Praça do Giraldo, once site of an execution ground during the inquisition, now has many shops and cafés for you to enjoy, and is surrounded by beautiful town houses, with the Santo Antão Church at one end of the square.

Another of Evora's many historical sites is the great Cathedral of Évora, which lies atop the highest point of the city. Built at the start of the 13th century, the cathedral still remains one of the largest medieval cathedrals in Portugal, and is considered to be an excellent example of Gothic architecture. The interior of the castle is as impressive as it's exterior, with the cathedral museum housing items such as the 16th century sceptre of Cardinal-King Henrique and many excellent paintings by artists of the period.

If you're looking to explore even further back than the 2nd century, then just a few miles outside the town lies the Cave of Escoural where you can find free tours that will show you the cave paintings that date back over 15,000 years.

With a private rental cottage in Evora, you're in the perfect place to see the other local areas of interest. Just close by is the beautiful town of of Estremoz, which is famous for being Portugal's largest producer of marble. The stone can be found everywhere in the town, the houses, the cobbles on the streets, and the pavements all use marble, making the entire town a must-see place.
