As one of the best preserved and most heavily fortified frontier towns in Europe, with many different historical buildings from different periods to explore, Elvas is a history lover's dream come true!
The Old Town of Elvas will provide you with days worth of exploration and discoveries. From the República Square with the 16th century Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção at it's head and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolação behind it. The Churches are both decorated with tiles of dazzling colours, and feature interiors with amazing marble columns.
A great way to see the entire history of Elvas from the Neolithic period onwards, is the Municipal Museum. Roman mosaics, religious paintings and old weapons from throughout the town's history are on display. Just outside the town is the ancient Amoreira Aqueduct, the city's most famous sight. At 4.5 miles in length and over 100 feet high, the aqueduct is still used today to bring water into the town.
With a holiday rental in Elvas you're in easy travelling distance to some of the other great places in Portugal. Another historical city, the city of Evora lies close to Elvas. Evora is well worth a day trip out to see it's open-air museum full of ruins in excellent condition. You might want to try a private rental cottage in Evora in order to really see everything in the city.
You also might try a short term rental villa in the village of Marvao, which offers spectacular 360º views of the area due to it's mountaintop location.
