Groningen, also known as the "Metropolis of the North", is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. Known as the "World Cycling City", as 57% of all journeys in the city are made by bicycle, Groningen is perfect if you want to ditch your car and just explore the city in whatever way you'd like. Try the Groninger Museum, one of the most modern museums in the Netherlands, full of various modern art exhibits all overlooking the canal. Groninger also has various other museums including the Het Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum, which chronicles the history and role of water transport until the 1970's; the Tabaksmuseum, a tobacco musuem and the Dutch cartoon museum.

The Martini tower (named after Saint Martinus rather than the drink!) has excellent views of the city, while a cruise on the canals offers you a unique view of Groningen as you're lower than all the houses! You can even try canoeing through the canals too.

Groningen has a vibrant nightlife, thanks mainly to it's student population. With many nightclubs and bars open until the small hours of the morning, the city is excellent for those who enjoy a good time out at night! Try the areas of the Grote Markt, the Vismarkt, and the Poelestraat and Peperstraat, which are usually the busiest areas.

Take a short trip out to see some of the other places in the Netherlands. If you're a fan of cheese the village of Edam - and it's world-famous cheese - is the perfect place to visit. It has it's own cheese museum and cheese market, and plenty of private apartments to try.
