Normandy is made up of two French regions: Haute Normandie and Basse Normandie. It is a coastal region and many of its main ports are just about household names in the west: Rouen, Dieppe, Le Harvre and Cherbourg. Situated in the north of France its coastline largely faces the south coast of England. With the proximity to England it is often the first port of call for English tourists.
Normandy, inland, is largely agricultural with fields stretching off into the distance and the occasional pretty little village. On the coast there is a mixture of developed areas and tranquil little towns that are very pleasing on the eye.
Most places have areas of interest although it is the capital of the region Rouen that has the most preserved architecture with its medieval centre. There is also the town of Bayeux which is certainly worth a visit as it is home to the famous Bayeux Tapestry and many older English folk will remember learning about it in thier history lessons!
Well worth a visit is Mont Saint-Michel, which is situated at the mouth of the Couesnon River near the town of Avranches. This tiny island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a really wonderful place to visit and makes a stunning impression when viewed from the south on the French coast. It is dominated by a gothic style church/abbey and in its few winding street are beautifully maintained streets from another age.
But Normandy has chateaux and cathedrals dotted all over it just waiting for you to stumble over on your holiday or vacation rental. It has a long coastline as mentioned and often one can venture away from built up areas to find peaceful, deserted, little beaches.
There are all sorts of outdoor activities to undertake from gentle strolls through the countryside to canoeing, kayaking and mountain biking to horse riding, golf and of course fishing.
