Auvergne Holiday Information and travel guide for Auvergne
Auvergne is home to France’s Massif Central mountain range. This range of mountains is volcanic and nature and although there has not been an eruption for several thousand years, those in the know stress that they are not extinct, merely dormant! The landscape is indeed very beautiful with seemingly every type of topography imaginable with lush forests and plunging valleys, rolling fields of green and lakes and rivers too!
For the outdoorsman this is a fanciful place to visit with all sorts of challenging terrain for the avid hiker. But with such beauty it is ideal, too, for those who like a leisurely gambol through wooded hills with just the singing of the birds for company and the warmth from the sun on their backs.
With all the volcanic rock and its filtering capabilities this area is also famous for the cleanliness of its waters. Several brand names are from the area and bottled for export and there are around ten spa towns that have water of such purity and wonderful hot spas that the French travel from all over for their healing qualities.
The area is also home to France’s largest national park the Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d’Auvergne and this is a must visit for nature lovers and budding geologists from everywhere.
Outdoors activities cover just about the whole spectrum from hang gliding through white water rafting, mountain biking, hiking, skiing and golf so there really is something for everyone.
Cheese plays a big part in the economy as there is a large amount of dairy farming that goes on in the region, so if you like cheese don’t forget to try some of the local specialities such as Cantal or Bleu a’Auvergne.
