Nestled in the White Mountains of New England is a small traditional town that is the one of the most photographed places in New Hampshire. Located just 210 miles north of Boston, the center of town looks just like it did over 200 years ago with a handful of white buildings including a church, an Inn, a school, town offices and the smallest library in New Hampshire. The town center has been featured in dozens of publications including books, magazines and calendars.
The town of Stark gets its name from Captain John Stark who led 400 men from New Hampshire to fight in the battle of Bunker Hill in Boston. He is also famous for coining the New Hampshire state motto “Live Free or Die” which is on every New Hampshire license plate.
The majority of the town of Stark is made up large tracts of public and private forest land. But the town also has 4 beautiful lakes, three rivers and several waterfalls. Wildlife abounds in the area and sightings of moose, deer, bear, fox, fisher cats, beaver, osprey and eagles are common. In addition to the lakes, here are 4 major rivers that provide excellent fishing. For summer recreation, there are several hiking and biking trails and a 7,500 acre ATV park nearby. In the winter, groomed snowmobile trails criss-cross the area and there are several downhill and cross country ski areas.
Although the town seems very remote, there are many services and attractions within a 30-45 minute drive. Located just 28 miles away is Mt. Washington, the highest mountain on the East Coast. In the summer, you can hike, drive or take a train to the top of this mountain to experience the most changeable weather in the world.
There are also many family amusement destinations including Santa’s Village, Six Gun City, Fort Splash, Storyland, the Conway Scenic Railway, Whales Tale Water Park and much more.
For a mix of sightseeing and history, you can visit 8 of New Hampshire’s famous covered bridges all located within a two hour drive. Or you can visit three of the remaining Grand Hotels built at the turn of the century to serve wealthy vacationers all located less than one hour away from Stark. Everywhere that you drive, you will be treated to stunning scenery, friendly people and traditional New England architecture.
A drive to Stark will take you back hundreds of years and the memories will last a lifetime.
