Mijas Pueblo is an historic "white village" perched on the edge of the Sierra de Mijas mountain range. This traditional village offers something for all the family including carriage and donkey rides, dining on tapas and local cuisine in the many restaurants, and being entertained with numerous fiestas and festivals throughout the year. The Pueblo also has the finest views on the Costa del Sol. From the gardens, on a clear day, one can see the coastline of Africa. Visit the museum in the original bull ring, and enjoy the quality leather and jewellery shops along with souvenirs and original art works. From Fuengirola, you can book trips to Granada, Ronda, Tangiers, Gibraltar and other interesting places. Close by is Aqua Park and Fuengirola Zoo. The Aquarium at Benalmedina is worth a visit along with Tivoli World where you can take the cable car up the mountain to the Bird Sanctuary. The motorway link is only a few kilometres away, giving easy access to the whole of the Costas by car where there are also numerous golf courses and tennis courts. With regular bus and train services linking the whole area, means that Mijas and its neighbour, Fuengirola, are perfect holiday destinations. For peace of mind, there are also British doctors and dentists available.
The photograph is of a cave built into a rocky outcrop by Mercedarian monks in 1520. Inside this cave is the image of the ‘Virgen de la Peña’, the patron Saint of the village. According to legend, the Virgin appeared on this spot on the 2nd of June 1586 to two young shepherds that had been led there by a pigeon. Subsequently an image of the Virgin was found concealed in a recess in the tower where it had been hidden for 500 years. In 1656 work started the sanctuary cave and today the Shrine is always decorated with candles, flowers and pictures as offerings.
