The Vallée du Douctouyre, or the valley of the river Douctouyre, is a wonderful area of southern France where you can find a privately owned holiday Gite and sit back and relax.
Take long walks across the stunning French country, with many hill and forest walking tracks in the area, ready for you to discover them! If walking isn't what you're looking for, you can ride a bike or even a horse around the area, taking in the beauty. If you're looking for something more water-based, there's the nearby Lac de Montbel which offers a wide range of water-based activities, including boating, kayaking and fishing. There's also a restaurant overlooking the lake with a pizzeria where you can have a drink and enjoy the view of the water, which turns a beautiful turquoise colour on hot summer days.
With a self-catering Gite in the Vallée du Douctouyre there's several other places that you might like to see. At the north of the valley is the town of Mirepoix, featuring the Cathédrale Saint-Maurice de Mirepoix at the heart of the town, and offering several places of interest such as the prehistoric cave paintings in nearby Niaux. There's some great
self-catering farmhouses in Mirepoix for you to enjoy.
Another place you might like is the capital of the Ariege region, Foix. Located to the west of the valley, Foix offers amazing mountain views, and also the mighty 9th century Château de Foix, home of the collections of the Ariège départemental museum, which tells the history of Ariege from ancient times. Why not try a
short term rental in Foix to really see the history of the area?
