Franche – Comte is located to the east of Burgundy and borders Switzerland. It is host to both the Vosges and the Jura mountains.
It is a stunning region with the most amazing topography. With the mountain ranges of the Vosges and the Jura this region is an exciting expanse of stunning backdrops. The valleys in between are full of rivers and streams with small lakes dotted about. Over half the landmass of Franche - Comte is covered in forests and the scenery is just breath- taking. There are great hikes all over and the chance to go canoeing through beautiful countryside. The Daubs River is a lovely river that winds its way through the French countryside and provides some enchanting walks – one can even follow it to a magical waterfall the Saut du Doubs near a town called Villers-le-Lac.

Besancon is the capital of this region as is also partly enclosed by the River Doubs. It is a beautiful, old city with a fascinating history and a rich heritage. The architecture is superb and very attractive with a lively riverside ambience. This town, and area, used to be a hotbed of clock making
Or take a trip to Ornans in the Loue valley a picturesque town full of lovely views and again perched on a river’s edge.

Along with the sightseeing and hiking this area is also much appreciated in the cross-country skiing fraternity as during the winter months the mountains receive some decent snow but generally there are not the same long steep pistes of downhill skiing found elsewhere and so the conditions are ideal for cross country skiing especially up on the high plateaus.

Being France the region is blessed with fine cuisine and wines – all go value for money and well worth trying out.
