Situated in the eastern Mediterranean, the island of Cyprus enjoys the best type of Mediterranean climate. Hot summers, moderated by refreshing sea-breezes, mild winters and around 320 days of sunshine each year make Southern Cyprus ideal to take on that feel-good factor
And where better to do it than in Pervolia, a seaside village a few miles to the South West of Larnaca, with easy access from the nearby airport.
Providing an ideal balance between a popular holiday centre and a traditional Cypriot village, with no large scale tourist developments or high-rise building, it has facilities used by holidaymakers and the friendly local villagers alike.
The whole area around Pervolia is quite flat, making it ideal for walking or cycling.
The cobbled village centre is about ½ mile from the 3 miles of unspoiled coast, and is closed-off to evening traffic during the main holiday season, ideal for families with younger children.
Here superb value eating, drinking and entertainment can be enjoyed in the four tavernas and the pub showing English football.
Keep you eyes peeled and you might see the local priests mingling in the tavernas or using a chainsaw to liberate felled trees to go into the back of their 4x4 pick-up, the local shepherds moving their herds of goats from field to field with a little help from their “sheepdogs” or the local kids riding their bikes through the village playing their instruments on the way back from weekly band practice..
That sums up Pervolia, a mix of the traditional way of life with a great base for a relaxing holiday.
The village centre tavernas offer a variety of food, including kebabs, local fish like Tsipura, and seemingly never-ending Mezes.
Most meals come complete with chips (using superb Cyprus potatoes) and salad, but generally baked potatoes or rice are offered as an alternative.
Cypriots are very proud of their culture, and Greek music nights will see the old and young alike showing off their traditional dancing skills, often balancing glasses of brandy on their heads or raising chairs into the air with their teeth!
Please don’t think of the Tavernas just for eating – sitting out on the terrace in the sunshine or shade with a coffee or a beer just watching the world go by can be a very pleasant experience.
Towards Cape Kiti are a couple of speciality fish tavernas, and Tony’s Bar & Grill, so popular that booking is recommended if you fancy a roast Sunday lunch for a change.
Local historical points of interest include the medieval Regainas Tower, Cape Kiti lighthouse and St.Leontios church with ancient paintings dating back to the 1600s.
