Rainbow Lake Cabin is a unique vintage property just off the end of Rainbow Lane on the shore of rainbow Lake. Designed in the style of Edwin Lundie's northwoods lodges of the 1920s, it features all redwood heartwood trim resawn from Napa Valley wine tanks, the kitchen cabinets are solid cherry, floors are slate and native oak boards. The exterior preserves a vintage look with Hand hewn, American Cherry timber framing, native stone foundation and the hand made texture of cedar shakes. All of this blends beatifully with native woodlands and south shore overlooking Rainbow Lake; But overlooking is an understatement, the lake is the living room. The floor plan is laid out to capture a sweeping view of the entire lake to the south and culminates in a "treehouse like" screened porch and deck which is nothing less than a Zen space.

This is truly a "green" house as well, designed with energy efficiency and environmental sensitivity in mind, it employs a passive solar orientation and augments electrical power service with a 500W array of solar shingles. The heating system utilizes an off-peak thermal storgage mass by means of a radiant slab in the lower level. All of this combines to reduce heating and cooling costs to roughly 60% of conventional structures. Natural ventilation in all rooms and the screened porch help catch the summer breeze; but if it is one of those August nights, the central air insures a pleasant nights sleep.

The architect, James Widder claims that "energy efficient" architecture does not have to look like some sort of "spacecraft" landed on the site. He feels that much of what people today call "new" technology is simply applying well tested historic principles of building design to provide a comfortable living space. This project is the synthesis of high performance and a natural aged beauty which makes it an excellent vintage.
