The house exhibits many fine period details, from beamed ceilings to formal parlor, and is surrounded by lovely grounds; including a traditional herb and flower garden a picket fenced front and back lawn, and children's play area. Realistic gas-log fireplaces add to the ambience in the winter. Two miles of hiking trails take one through fields and forest and much wildlife can be seen, including deer, hawks, foxes, turkeys and an occasional bald eagle. Period outbuildings complete the scene, including a smokehouse used to smoke 50 Virginia hams for the coronation feast of King Edward the VII.

From Jamestown, it is 6 miles to Colonial Williamsburg. Richmond is an hours' drive, and Virginia Beach is about 1 hour and 20 minutes away.
Chippokes State Park is in Surry itself, with an Olympic sized pool, museum, and river beach access.
While Lightwood feels completely away from it all, it is really only 1 and 1/2 miles from the small town of Surry, where stores, several restaurants, banks and a post office can be found.
It is a love of nature, and a love of history which draws people to Lightwood, and there are few places in the United States where one is surrounded by so much of both.
