Vacation Rental Description
The Chatelle House was built at the turn of the century when St. Ignace was a thriving and bustling logging and commercial fishing port. The downtown was a hub of activity with shops, hotels, saloons, workers and rail service. Rail service transported the volumes of people that came to visit, hunt or work in the U.P. crossing the Straits of Mackinac from the Lower Peninsula to St. Ignace. In 1923, the State started a ferry service, which operated until the opening of the Mackinac Bridge in 1957. The skeleton of the Chief Wawatam dock stands today as part of a reminder of our history. Visit the site on a stroll along our popular Huron Boardwalk, taking you along the marina and out to the lighthouse platform.
The Chatelle house was built in that era, housing families that lived and worked in this community. Today with some renovations, it once again serves the traveler or worker, some stay a week, some stay months. It’s location, just ½ block off State Street is the perfect location to experience downtown living, the Huron Boardwalk, ferries to Mackinac Island, the new St. Ignace Marina.
Direct snowmobile access and top notch x-country ski trails and North Country hiking trails are minutes away making this a great winter getaway as well. The upstairs flat (Apt. 2) features 1100 sq. ft, living space, 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed, living area, completely furnished kitchen, cable TV and high speed internet. This flat includes everything you need to be comfortable during your stay. Views of downtown and Lake Huron are a bonus. An affordable housing option for the smart traveler.
A perfect location to be close to the action of summer festivals, farmers markets, parades and plenty of activity but off the main street. Walk to the Ferry lines to Mackinac, church, Wednesday and Thursday evening music concerts held at the marina and the Saturday Farmers market. Enjoy a historic guided walking tour on the weekend or visit the downtown restaurants, parks, museums and shops that dot this small but quaint downtown.
Other areas of interest and day trips are Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, Cedarville, Hessel and the Les Cheneaux Islands, Sault Ste. Marie and so many more places. Experience the Great Waters, Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks, area lakes, hiking and ski trails. So many things to do. Launch your boat at the nearby boat launch and spend the day fishing or cruising the Straits of Mackinac or head out to Brevort Lake for a day of fishing and lounging. The Lake Michigan Sand Dunes and #1 swimming beach is just a 15 minutes drive on U.S. #2
