Have you ever dreamed of living on your own private island? Does the idea of peaceful seclusion, and the sound of Nature's quiet all around you, sound appealing? Beautifully wooded Oar Island, with its 38 family-owned acres in Muscongus Bay, is accessible only by boat, so you can relax in your own private retreat and "pull the drawbridge up after you". Yet all the amenities you could wish are not far, as Oar Island is just 1/4 mile from the mainland.

Explore over a mile of famous rocky coast of Maine and its ledges of granite. Look for crystals of tourmaline and garnet, and even the occasional fossil. In the woods you'll find orchids, sundews, and rhodora, as well as bushes of blueberry, huckleberry, and bayberry. Look above you and see osprey, kingfisher, blue heron, and maybe even our own bald eagle.

At high tide jump in the water for a swim -- right outside your front door; the shore is only 20 feet away. Don't bother with the grocery store. Instead, when the tide has gone out, dig your own clams or gather mussels from the rocks where you swam only hours before. A walk along the shore at low tide lets you explore the tide pools where you may find starfish and sea urchins, sea anemones and whelks. You can also gather the wild greens –
samphire and orach – for a salad.

Take one of our boats out to go fishing for striped bass, mackerel, or pollock; the people at the marina can tell you what fish are biting and where to find them. At the marina you can also buy lobsters caught by the local fishermen, whose boats move up and down the channel all day, hauling their traps marked by the brightly colored floats dotting the water.

Dine on the screened porch overlooking the water. When darkness has finally fallen after the long northern summer day, go out to look for constellations, meteors, or the milky way in the clear sky. If the night should become chilly you can enjoy the warmth of a fire in the woodstove.

From the marina you can easily get to nearby mainland shopping and numerous local attractions. Restaurants, supermarkets, antique shops, museums, are within 15 minutes drive.

Both houses on Oar Island are up-to-date and equipped with more amenities than one would expect on a small island. Both offer full-time utility electricity, hot and cold running water, telephone, woodstove, a well-equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower and tub. There is a television, VCR, and radio in each house. Each kitchen includes an electric refrigerator, gas stove, stainless steel sink, microwave oven, coffeemaker, mixer, and plenty of cooking utensils including large pots for your lobster feasts.

The Cottage has a double bed in the downstairs bedroom and two twin bunks in each of the two upstairs bedrooms. Folding cots and cribs are available for extra guests or small children.

Boating skills are required, as you have to get yourself to and from the island.

Rowboat is provided, and outboard motor boat is available for an extra fee. Other facilities include navigation charts, charcoal grill, fishing nets and crab traps.

Reservation requires at least 50% of house rent on deposit. Balance is due no later than 30 days before scheduled arrival. Security deposit is required in the amount of $500 per house; this is fully refunded after departure if there are no damages or losses. Maine state tax must be charged at 7% of the rent. No cleaning fee. Motor boat, if needed, is $350 extra plus tax, with $100 security deposit. Cancellation before December 1 for the following season will result in immediate refund of full amount paid. In the event of cancellation from December 1 onward the week will be put back on the market and evey effort will be made to find a new renter. If a new renter is found the deposit will be refunded minus $100. In the event of cancellation 30 days or less before scheduled arrival no refund will be made. Payment may be made by check, wire transfer, or credit card. Contact the owners for details.
