Vacation Rental Description
Little Island House sits at the tip of a peninsula in Bass Harbor. The lawn rolls to beach roses and the water's edge; flower beds and sweet peas grace your comings and goings. Beside the house is a 350' dock which you are welcome to stroll with early morning coffee, a rod and reel, or binoculars. Or just stand on your deck: mountains to
the north; fishing boats lying at their moorings, the hillside village of Bernard, and sunset to the west; and the outer islands and open ocean to the south. Eagles, loons, herons and all manner of ducks and gulls visit the harbor.
The Upstairs apartment has a large granite fireplace, cathedral ceiling and skylight in the living/dining areas. Kitchen, bathroom with shower; study area extends your living space. The third floor bedroom, with skylight, has a queen-size bed. From the living room, a sliding glass door opens onto the deck, which extends around the side and front of the house. This apartment sleeps two.
The spacious deck of the Downstairs apartment is only a few feet from the water's edge at high tide. The sliding glass door opens into the living room area and fireplace, with kitchen and dining area beyond. The front bedroom has a queen-size bed, and a second bedroom has twin beds; full bath. This apartment sleeps four. It is also enjoyed by folks who appreciate easy access, as it has a small, easy ramp with handrail onto the deck in addition to the two steps up onto the front porch entry. The full bath has a grab-rail. Perfect for a couple preferring no stairs.

Views are beautiful. Bass Harbor has been photographed for the cover of a National Geographic book about New England, and has been the site of several movies. The lobster fishing boats are always interesting, and if you love wildlife, we've watched eagles soar past the deck (they frequent the harbor), counted twelve herons in the low tide one September day, and watched loons, ducks, terns and gulls work the harbor.
Activities
There's plenty to do in Bass Harbor, a fishing village and working harbor on the southern end of Mount Desert Island. The Swan's Island Ferry leaves from here, and the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Wonderland and Ship Harbor hiking trails, part of Acadia National Park, are a mile or so away.
At Little Island Marine, the small boatyard which shares the peninsula with the Little Island House, the "Island Cruise" makes nature trips and lunch cruises daily. A rowboat is available from our dock for rowing around the harbor anytime. Restaurants are within walking distance.
