Take a drive up the North Shore to Princeville, named after Price Albert, this resort community overlooks Bali Hai vistas, the location for the famous movie "South Pacific." This area offers golfing and shopping for those interested. Kilauea Lighthouse is on the North Shore it was built in 1913, the Kilauea Lighthouse beacon used to steer ships traversing the blue Pacific to safety. It's also a favorite stop for bird watchers with the Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge right next door. 
 
Taking a short trip up the Wailua River to Fern Grotto, a cave cloaked in mist and tropical ferns. This romantic spot is the setting for many Island weddings.This tropical cavern is accessible by Wailua River boat rides or by kayak. It's curtained with cascading ferns. Take Highway 56 and immediately after crossing the Wailua Bridge, turn right into the Wailua River Marina and Fern Grotto entrance.

For a Luau, you will need to reserve your tickets in advance, usually 5+ days, they book fast! I enjoyed the Luau at The ResortQuest Kauai Beach at Makaiwa. It’s located on the ocean adjacent to Coconut Plantation Marketplace, less then a mile south of the house towards the airport. Iwas a beautiful venue that begins on the water with Mai Tais and entertainment, the sunset was breathtaking and we thoroughly enjoyed the ritual and tasting the foods of Kauai. The dinner is located in a large tent and afterwards, you will se flame throwers outside!

You may like to shop at the privately run Sunnyside Farmers Market (tel. 808/822-0494), on Kuhio Highway in the middle of Kapaa, Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7:30pm and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.  
 
The expanded Dori's Garden Cafe adjoining the market serves sandwiches, soups, salads, and smoothies -- everything from fresh juices to Lappert's ice cream. You MUST try Lappert's ice cream; it's the best on the island! 
 
Kintaros is great for fresh sushi. It's about a mile south on the main highway towards the airport, you will see it on the left side. 
 
Another great stop is Pono's fish market. They have a lot of fresh fish every morning and it goes fast. Their lunch box special is fabulous. It's in downtown Kapa'a, and it's less then a mile north of the house on the right side of the street.
