Hilo town is not far away (12 miles), full of history and charm and a colorful Wednesday and Saturday market. Lots of good restaurants, a beautiful Japanese garden right in town and some nice beaches for snorkelling, swimming or just lazing are all within an easy drive. The Hamakua coast with its spacious views and a lovely tropical botanical garden is right up the road to the north; if you drive further, in an hour you'll be in the high country of Waimea, with its cool rolling hills and the big mountains in the background.
Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park is about 1/2 hour away, and offers stunning shows of volcanic activity.
Mauna Kea observatories can be visited, and the center on the way to the top is a great place to learn more about the stars over Hawaii.
To the south, the Puna coastline is wild and yet accessible in places, with warm ponds and steam vents to visit. Whales in winter love to play in the waters here.
