Savannah has a great history - founded in the early 1700's by the British to serve as a buffer between the wealthy rice planters of South Carolin and the Spanish in Florida. The first settlers were debtors from England. The city was laid out by General Oglethorpe and has a distinctive grid system with 26 Squares. The squares are beautiful and filled with azaleas, live oak trees and palm trees. There are 3 distinctive historic areas - The Colonial section (the original houses from Oglethorpe's time), The Ante-Bellum section (homes from before the War Between the States when Cotton was King), The Victorian section (homes built after the War when Savannah made a come back after the Yankees departed and before the boll weevil destroyed the Cotton economy).
Savannah has the largest historic district in the United States.
