Tranquility in the desert
Left on 11/01/2010 for a stay in October 2010
What a comfortable house, what a delightful host! We spent 6 nights here in October and could easily have spent 6 weeks. The pictures certainly capture the basics of the house, but they can't capture the feel of the air or the sounds of the morning birds or the sense of being in your own quiet corner of the desert. First, the house: it is perfectly comfortable, clean, and well equipped. Kitchen with everything you'd ever need; wonderful king bed; reliable wireless; computer with a printer (!), washer and dryer; loads of towels; a big TV that is probably wonderful but that we never turned on. There are verandas and a deck all around the house--always a place to be out in (or out of, depending...) the sun. Second, the location: it is indeed about 10 minutes to I-10 and less than 30 minutes to most places you'd want to go in Tucson. But it feels like it's miles and miles away--truly a retreat. Entrancing scenery everywhere you look, and a magnificent cityscape far below. Third, the host: Tom is warm, friendly, and welcoming. We saw him just twice--the evening we arrived, and the next day--but we knew he was close by if we had questions or concerns. We are hoping to come back again and would recommend this property to others with absolutely no hesitation.

Perfect in every way
Left on 01/23/2011 for a stay in January 2011
This is the perfect rental property - roomy, immaculate, comfortable, and accommodating in every way. It has everything you could possibly need or want in a home: washer/dryer, desktop computer and wi fi, satellite TV, a superb kitchen, bedrooms on opposite sides of the house, 2 great decks, gas fireplace, a 15-minute walk to a nature preserve, etc. etc. etc. Plus, virtually total privacy inside and out. You would really have to work hard to spot or be seen from another house. Most importantly, at least for us, it is in the Sonoran desert with spectacular views in all directions. This means sunrises, sunsets, saguaro cacti, coyotes, humming birds, quail, and no people or vehicles in sight. Great nature viewing and photography right from the deck. Located near and with easy access to all the attractions on the west side of Tucson - the arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Gates Pass, Saguaro National Park West. Central and downtown Tucson and museums and restaurants a very easy 20-minute drive. Very good shopping nearby (10-15 minute drive). Also easy access to Sabino, Mt. Lemmon, San Xavier Del Bac, Saguaro East, and even Kartchner Caverns. Tom is the perfect host and only a phone call or a 6 minute walk away. All in all, a simply magical desert experience. Recommended without reservation (but be sure to make one).

Our Home away From Home-we keep coming back!
Left on 03/07/2011 for a stay in June 2010
We love the Tucson Retreat! We have stayed there 3 times (so far). Each time is wonderful. I have lots of chronic allergies and this is the one place that I can count on to make my stay easy and allergy free. Thomas is a great host and makes sure that our stay is comfortable and healthy.
I love the views and the nature that is literally right at the door. Thomas has made the Tucson Retreat a nature sanctuary that is both beautiful and educational.
I would live there full time if I could. I love how peaceful it is. Even though it is secluded, you are only a few minutes from everything you want and need in town.
Bob says he likes it there :-)

Remote desert ambience 10 minutes from Tucson
Left on 06/05/2011 for a stay in May 2011
My daughter was a student at the University of arizona and on previous visits I stayed in hotel or resort properties closer to the urban action of Tucson, taking recreational day trips to the desert for hiking and so on. For her graduation I thought would enjoy a week's stay in a more secluded desert setting. Boy I was not disappointed with Tom's guest house. This house works well mornings, afternoons, evenings, and nights. It is not luxurious per se, but it is secluded, comfortable, well equipted, well built and maintained, clean, and the desert in which is sits is beautiful. Open the windows and the desert breezes off the Western District of the Saguaro National Park and Tucson Mountains blow through, making for very pleasant experience during my mid-May stay. Hiking trails and desert wildlife are right outside the door. Make sure to visit with Tom the owner if he's available. He is a very pleasant person as well as a scientist, author, and photographer of high repute who has travelled the world and loves and understands the pulse of the desert southwest.
Sure beats the Marriot for me!!

Perfect getaway
Left on 07/01/2011 for a stay in April 2011
The location was perfect. Close to everything we needed but far enough away to enjoy the desert and the wildlife. Easy access to I-10 to visit attractions near Tucson
House had every amenity we wanted and was very well maintained. Tom, the owner, was near enough to answer questions if needed.
Highly recommended. Wish we were there now!

Heaven
Left on 10/25/2011 for a stay in October 2011
A stunning setting in the foothills of the Sonoran Desert. The house was large, comfortable, clean and tidy with all the facilities you need to have a comfortable stay.
Thomas our host was close by if we needed him and was very helpful with information about the area ,history and wildlife.
We were lucky to see the local wildlife such as Mule Deer, rabbits, native birds and even a tarantula.
Tucson attractions are close by and stores within easy reach.
After a long busy day sight seeing it was lovely to return 'home' to the peace and quiet of the desert, a true retreat.
Staying here was a highlight of our three week stay in arizona , it was sad to leave, but we plan to return one day , a slice of heaven we recommend to anyone.

Idyllic spot for our vacation
Left on 11/16/2011 for a stay in October 2011
We had a great time in Tucson, and because we rented a house, it was like living there properly for ten days, going to the supermarket and watering the flowers and so on. It was so hard to leave! The weather was very warm and we had deer and house finches and hummingbirds just outside - we even set up a hummingbird feeder we found in the cupboard, so it was just like feeding the birds at home. The house is large and cool and very pleasant and has a lot of equipment in it to make your stay very easy. I missed the lack of a clothes drying rack in addition to the washing machine, but that was all! Of course it was easy to dry clothes on the veranda but it was quite windy at times and they had a tendency to blow away... Anyway virtually everything else you can think of is provided. The furniture is charming but some of it is getting a little old and delicate. However, of course this didn't detract from our visit - the place is idyllic and our host was very attentive and made sure we had a great time.

Super Stay!
Left on 02/02/2012 for a stay in January 2012
It had what we wanted: privacy with no houses in sight, good king bed, clean, good internet, and a great view from the bedroom and patio. The bonuses were a coyote/rabbit chase right in front of us on the patio, a wonderful sunny week, and friendly visit and view of some of Tom's work. The area provided more than enough to do every day. Missions to visit, the aZ - Sonora Desert Museum, Mt. Lemon Observatory, Historic downtown, Saguaro National Parks, Sabino Canyon, Madera Canyon, and a gorgeous sunset at Tucson Mtn. Park. The vegan restaurant, "Lovin' Spoonfuls" was a nice find. It was nice to come back to a very pleasant and warm house in the chill of the January evening.

An unforgettable stay in the wonderful Sonoran Desert
Left on 06/10/2012 for a stay in April 2012
The property is carefully nestled within a pristine area of Sonoran Desert. A wide range of wildlife and desert plants can be seen right by the house. There are stunning mountain and cactus views from all angles. During our stay we saw mule deer, coyote, bobcat, Gambel's quail, hummingbirds etc within yards of the property. The nearby Sweetwater Preserve is a must for hiking and shows the Sonoran Desert at its best.
The house is within easy driving distance of downtown Tucson and its many local attractions. Various guides to local sights, eateries etc. can be found in the house.
The house itself is very well furnished and equipped - including a good internet connection. It has a comfortable, cosy feel both inside and when lazing on the outside terraces.
The owner, Tom Wiewandt, lives nearby and is a charming and efficient host. Tom is a wildlife photographer and author and has a deep knowledge of the area which he is pleased to share with his guests.
In summary - a really memorable place. Highly recommended.
