Merida, a jewel of history, architecture and culture, is located just 32 kilometers due south of Progreso.
Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan, is just a hop and a skip away from Progreso, so you won't want to miss it. This 519 year old colonial city, the entrance to the Mayan world, is a wonderful city with cobble stone streets, colonial buildings painted cheerful colors, and quaint parks. The main plaza and the historic center areas have churches, a government palace, a cathedral, museums, theaters, parks, sidewalk cafes, art galleries, bookstores, handcraft shops and retail stores.
