San Miguel is a charming colonial town with cobblestone streets and pastel buildings. Burros still carry wood for the local fireplaces. It was one of the centers of the Mexican Revolution. Today it is reknowned as a center for "belle arte" and is frequented by artists and musicians. There is an array of art and cooking schools as well as theater, jazz, salsa, classical music and cabarets. There are the finest international gourmet restaurants anywhere. It is widely known for its "fiestas" often as many as two per month. When the town explodes with local color and folklore. San Miguel is a great "hub" for side trips: Guanajuata an antique silver mining center. Dolores Hidalgo, which was the apex of the mexican revolution. A Totonijco, with it's fascinating sanctuary. Pozos, a high desert silver mining center and ghost town. Mexico itself is an easy 3 hour drive.
