York is a historic city founded by the Romans and occupied by all the major peoples to have passed through the area: Celts, Saxons, Vikings, Normans... King George VI remarked that the history of York is the history of Enlgand. The mediaeval walls and gates are still standing, making a pleasant 2 1/2 mile walk around the old city. The city is home to the Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, and a number of major museums and historic houses: the National Railway Museum, the Castle Musuem, the Yorkshire Museum, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, the Treasurer's House, the Barley Hall, the Quilt Museum, Fairfax House etc. It is also a hub for visits to Castle Howard, where Brideshead Revisited was filmed, the ruined abbeys of Byland and Rievaulx, many National Trust stately homes and the chocolate-box-pretty villages in the Howardian Hills. Walkers and cyclists enjoy a visit to the nearby moors.
