Vacation Rental Description
Beachside Cottage is a pretty 18th Century cottage which can sleep up to 6 if the bed settee in the living room is used, and is only a short walk from the harbour side in Staithes. A few steps from the cottage and you are looking over the harbour wall onto the beach below or gazing out to sea scanning a horizon busy with boats of every type. The cottage is set amongst the other ancient cottages in this historic village, with its maze of narrow paths and passages, celebrated as the home of Captain Cook. The cottage boasts some wonderful original features including cast iron fireplaces, exposed stone walls, stripped pine doors and beamed ceilings, and yet now provides all the comforts of modern living. It has a modern fitted kitchen, a shower over an original claw foot roll top bath, electric central heating, TV/Video/DVD and a washer and dryer.
Staithes is now famous for once being the home of Captain James Cook where he worked as an assistant to the merchant William Sanderson for 18 months from 1745 and it is hard to avoid the pull of the sea as you walk along the harbour front or explore the beach and rock pools. Luckily the village is well served with restaurants, bistros, cafes, pubs and coffee shops to build you up before and after exploring the area.
Staithes is on the northern edge of the beautiful North York Moors National Park with its lovely walks, pretty villages and bustling market towns. 12 miles inland is Grosmont, the northern terminus of the famous North York Moors Steam Railway which runs through some of the National Park's most spectacular gorges and beautiful valleys for 18 miles to Pickering. There is also a mainline link to Whitby. Whitby by road is just 13 miles down the coast and is an ancient port famous as the setting off point for the voyages of Captain Cook. Then there is charming Robin Hood's Bay famous for its smuggling past and then the bustling seaside resort of Scarbrough. 9 miles west of Staithes is the seaside resort of Saltburn with its grand Victorian and Edwardian buildings and famous for its pier. Its beach is of course now famous for being the backdrop for the spectacular scenes in the film 'Atonement'.
Hire of the Cottage includes all electricity and heating including coal and wood, all bed linen (nb not personal towels) and a parking permit. There is only very limited parking in the village, which is reserved for permanent residents. It is accepted that on arrival you may park near the cottage for a short time while you unload and the same when you depart. (There is actually no road outside the cottage only a pathway.) Your car would need to be taken up to the car park at the top of the village after unloading. The walk from the car park to the cottage is less than 10 minutes.
