Vacation Rental Description
Full of character, charm and original period features, Ammonite Cottage offers a peaceful and homely atmosphere on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Located in a sleepy residential village just a few steps away from the trout-filled River Dove and a thunderous weir, Ammonite is a popular self-catering cottage with many famous local attractions only a short drive, walk or cycle ride away.

With one double and one twin bedroom plus a bathroom on the first floor, the cottage is ideal for families or one or two couples. The ground floor offers spacious accommodation with a cosy and comfortable sitting room leading open-plan to a kitchen/dining room illuminated by natural sunlight. Winter nights are warmed with a roaring log fire in an original Yorkshire range fireplace.

At the rear of the cottage the flower-filled garden is a delight with a paved sunken patio perfect for evening barbecues. A secluded lawn provides plenty of safe space for kids or pets, whilst at the garden’s edge, a summer house looks out over a field to the weir of the River Dove. A meandering stream flows to the watermill next door completing the countryside scene.

Ammonite Cottage is a delightful holiday home ideally suited to those looking for an authentic countryside getaway which reflects the ancient heritage of the local Ryedale region. Although reflective of the past, we've ensured we haven't ignored the present - so the cottage comes equipped with luxuries such as a home computer with Wi-fi internet (great for researching local information, events and things to do) plus Freeview TV - all at no extra charge. A basket of firewood is also included in the rental price during winter months.

  • On opening the front door into the cottage, charm and authenticity are instantly evident. The original Yorkshire-range cast iron fireplace, one of only a handful remaining in the county, provides a grand focal point to a bright and airy beamed room. The spacious and fully-fitted kitchen/dining room is often bathed in natural light from two large windows in the sloping roof. Upstairs, two bedrooms, each with an exposed ‘truss’ beam, provide a peaceful place to sleep. French doors open out onto a secluded walled patio which is colourfully paved in Indian stone. Bathed in sunlight for much of the day, the patio is a perfect spot for early evening BBQ's. At the end of the garden a bubbling stream flows from the River Dove and its cascading weir - both only a 100 metres or so from the cottage. At the front of the cottage, parking is available directly outside the front door, on the quiet village through road. Ammonite Cottage is located only a few minutes walk from the traditional market town of Kirkbymoorside. The town has a good range of shops and amenities including pubs, restaurants, cafés, squash club, tennis courts, and golf course. To the east is Pickering, which offers a swimming pool, cinema, trout fishery, a castle, antique shops and is the home of the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway – a ‘must-do’ journey on a steam train.

One of the UK’s premier theme parks - Flamingo Land - is only 16 km away, whilst the golden sand beaches of Scarborough are within 45 minutes drive. Also nearby are Castle Howard, Byland and Rievaulx Abbeys, Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby and Lightwater Valley. Last but not least is one of England’s finest National Parks, the North York Moors….roaming sheep, wild heather, picture-postcard villages and great countryside for walking, exploring or just leisurely touring.

"Thank you so much for a lovely stay. The place was perfect for our family of 4. We especially enjoyed the fireplace and relaxing for the week. We hope someday to return."

"A magical week that both began and ended with snow! The Log fire was ‘de regeur’ and very welcome. Thanks for all the luxury touches. We will be back!"

"A perfect week, we didn’t want it to end. Tremendous walks in beautiful countryside and the welcoming warmth of Ammonite cottage to return to. It really is a home from home. We couldn’t resist the log fire at the end of the day, matched by a bottle of red wine. Expect a call for next year."
    The Ellis family
    Leicestershire

"As regular visitors to the area we are happy to award ***** (five stars) to Ammonite Cottage which has proved to be a most welcome addition to our list of ‘places to stay’ in North Yorkshire. Thank you."
    The MacGregors
    East Lothian

"Lovely to see that what appeared on the internet was what we actually got! Cottage and garden really nice. Although August had one cool evening, which was all I needed to ask my husband to light a fire. Ooo so cosy!!
Enjoyed the walks that we took both locally and further afield. Jenson (the Dalmatian) thoroughly enjoyed his freedom. Not to mention how he was so intrigued with the hens & cockerels next door. His face was a picture.
Thank you for a lovely break."

Family Holiday in 2010 Professional Holiday Rental Property Owner and Tour Operator

I'm originally from North Yorkshire and have spent my life working in the travel and hospitality business - as a rental property owner, tour operator and as a tour guide. I've been lucky enough to travel all over the world and now spend a lot of my time in Africa (Morocco and Tanzania) when not in North Yorkshire (or my other UK base in Surrey). I set my standards high and always aim to deliver first-rate customer service, with prompt speed of reply, fair prices and a high quality product. As well as running Specialist Africa, a UK-based Tour Operator which specialises in Tanzania and Morocco, I also co-own Riad Africa, a beautiful rental property in Marrakech and more recently a desert camp in the Sahara and a lodge in the High Atlas Mountains.
