Overlooked by a 12th Century castle, situated on the River Rye and with a stream running round the back of the square, Helmsley is one of Yorkshire’s prettiest towns.
Attractions in Helmsley include the five-acre Helmsley Walled Garden, Duncombe Park stately home and the Helmsley Arts Centre. A short drive to the east is Pickering, home of the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway – a ‘must-do’ journey through breathtaking Yorkshire scenery on a steam train.
One of the UK’s premier theme parks - Flamingo Land - is only 17 miles away, whilst the golden sand beaches of Scarborough are within an hour’s drive. Also nearby are Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Byland and Rievaulx Abbeys, Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby and Lightwater Valley. Last but not least is one of England’s finest National Parks, the North York Moors….roaming sheep, wild heather, picture-postcard villages and great for walking, cycling, exploring or leisurely touring.
