Vacation Rental Description
The Old Bakery is situated on the Towy River estuary in the friendly village of Llansteffan. The apartment embraces a flowery courtyard perfect for outdoor living. It is on the site of the original village bakery, and the outside stone walls survive.
The accommodation is all on one floor. It comprises two double bedrooms (one with double bed, the other with 2 single beds); a large sittingroom with digital TV (with freeview) and DVD player; a fully-equipped kitchen/diner with fridge, cooker, microwave, dishwasher, washing-machine and dryer. The bathroom has a shower over the bath and a toilet. There is a cloakroom with a second toilet.
Prices include electricity and heating. The Old Bakery is centrally heated throughout. Bedding and towels are provided. There is a cot and high chair avalable.

You are a few steps away from a golden sandy beach. There are opportunities for splendid coastal walks with spectacular views over Carmarthen Bay, excellent fishing and bird-watching. The estuary fills up with the tide to form an enchanting sea, guarded by an impressive 12th Century castle. When the tide goes out, there is literally miles of beach - just the place for sand-castles, kite-flying or family cricket.
Llansteffan is a friendly village with an old church, a village shop and post office, a good pub and an excellent restaurant. Use the local tennis courts and boatclub, or visit nearby golf courses or horse-riding facilities.

This is Dylan Thomas country. He spent childhood holidays with his family, who lived in Llansteffan, and the village and its characters were a major influence on his work. The bakery was run by two sisters, who are said to be the models for Dai Bread's two wives in Under Milk Wood. Laugharne, where Thomas lived at the end of his life, is on the same estuary, although a different river. We recommend a visit to the boat house and his writing hut.

You are within half an hour of the National Botanic Garden of Wales and the magical re-claimed garden of Aberglasney. Many other famous castles and gardens are close by. If you wish to explore Wales further, you could plan easy day trips to the Black Mountains, the Preseli hills or the spectacular Pembrokeshire beaches and islands.

This is a no-smoking cottage. Sorry, no pets!

  • From the visitors’ book 2009…..

'Great cottage and town. Beautiful surroundings and fantastic panorama.'

'What an idyllic place! I think we have discovered Wales's best kept secret!'

'I loved the perfectly set up little house. It's charming and comfortable, with everything we needed. I loved watching the tides and walking the beach, having pate and cheese and wine with my husband in the courtyard, and lazing in the endless summer daylight.'

'The kids loved the simple pleasures of the beach like shell and crab collecting. It was priceless watching their faces as they jumped into large rock pools'

'The Old Bakery is a home from home with extras. Never stayed anywhere with all the little refinements, flowers, welsh cakes etc.
PS The Castle Inn was very hospitable. Lovely cream teas at the beach shop.'

'Once again, time to go. As always, what does one say to sing the praises of such a place and such a welocome.'
