An idyllic self catering holiday cottage overlooking the River Stour separating Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset.
Vacation Rental Description
The perfect rural retreat - self catering in luxury. The farmhouse and cottages are tucked into the lower end of a lush valley, surounded by the Stourhead estate and the FitzGerald's own 150 acre farm, ponds, sheep, horses and hens. Children will love it here, nature lovers too. Pen Mill Cottage is converted from a traditional stone barn and lies adjacent to the former farmyard which is now home to free range chicken and horses - not to mention the black and honey coloured sheep who have lawn mowing duties in the valley bottom. The terrace with views up the valley is perfect for all ages and many guests find it hard to tear themselves away from the peaceful garden where deer, badgers and foxes are regular visitors. The sunny cottage is ideal for the elderly who may not want to climb stairs. There is a Games Room for children with table tennis, table football, stilts, darts and swing ball and the stream can provide hours of amusement damming the water or catching crayfish. Guests are welcome to walk over the farm and suggested routes are printed out - the 15 minute walk across fields to The White Lion is particuarly popular!
The cottage is light, spacious and freshly decorated. There is a large kitchen/diner with a 4-door AGA, seating for 8 round a pine kitchen table, dishwasher and a French door to the terrace. The sitting room has an open log fire and two comfortable sofas and two extra armchairs which provide comfy viewing for the tv which has a digibox and dvd. There are two double bedrooms, one of which has an additional childs' bed and a spacious twin bedroom (also 2 cots). We have two bathrooms - one with a bath and the other has a shower.
The owners live in the farmhouse across the road and are always delighted to help with sightseeing plans. The area is very unspoilt yet has good commucation by M3/A303 to London in less than 2 hours and to the north via the M5.We are adjacent to the National Trust Stourhead estate and Longleat which is always popular with our visitors is only 15 minutes away. Stonehenge, Salisbury, Cheddar Gorge, the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Bath are also within very easy reach and are well worth visiting. This area is famous for the lovely gardens - Stourhead, Stourton House and Chiff Chaffs (RHS) are within 1 mile and Sherborne, Mapperton, Forde Abbey, East Lambrook Manor and Montacute can be easily reached.
However, though we are so near to so many famous sights, many of our visitors find it hard to tear themselves away from our sunny terrace with views up the secret valley and the wildlife. We can also recommend the Street Shopping Village for those who enjoy retail theropy.
Facilities
There is a Games Room with table tennis, table football, darts, swing ball and stilts in a former stable which guests are welcome to use. We also have ample carparking. In the garden there is a childs swing on the old apple tree, 2 loungers, wooden benches, chairs and tables in the cottage garden. There is also use of the owner's boat for rowing on their small lake.
Activities
Many guests enjoy clay pigeon shooting which is available at nearby Woods Farm, Mere or coarse fishing is available at Stourhead and Longleat.
Pen Mill Cottage is adjacent to two well known long distance footpaths - the Monarch's Way and the Stour Valley Way which runs from Christchurch to Stourhead.
Nearby Longleat House and the many attractions are so popular with our visitors so we are now able to offer you entrance tickets at a 15% reduction.

Bookings run from 3pm on Saturday until 10am the following Saturday. In April and September it is possible to book long weekends. There are no hidden extras or meters. The price quoted includes linen, towels, heating and electricity. A basket of logs is supplied in winter and further cut wood is available. A deposit of one third of the total rent is required when booking, and the balance is due six weeks before your holiday. For UK visitors, payment by cheque or on-line transfer is preferred please. For overseas guests payment is easiest by on line banking to First Direct. A charge of £10.00 is made for overseas bookings to cover this cost. Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement. A charge of £30 per dog. Please telephone the owners, Sarah and Peter FitzGerald, two days prior to your holiday to make arrangements to be given the front door key. They live very close to the cottage so are on hand to halp with any problems.

Welcome to Pen Mill Farm
We are lucky enough to live in a beautiful part of Britain - very rural yet close to many unspoilt sightseeing venues such as Stourhead, Longleat and Bath.
We inherited our 150 acre farm from Peter's parents who farmed in an organic way. We have cattle, honey coloured sheep and free range hens, not to mention about 6 horses and a foal.
In the 8th century, Penselwood was one of the 25 great cities of Britain but this is extremely hard to imagine nowdays and at night the barkingof foxes will bethe only thing to keep you awake.
We live in an area of special garden soil so there are many famous gardens clustered nearby and we try to keep the garden at Pen Mill Cottage full of lovely colourful flowers for your enjoyment.
