Vacation Rental Description

Our Glastonbury house is a terrace house built in 1869 for the clergy of St Benedicts church, on a quiet residential street just off the High Street. This calm retreat is in the middle of an ancient and historical town of 8,000.

Originally called Avalon, myths abound about Glastonbury including visits by Joseph of Arimathea, and that the first Christian church in England was built here. Catholic and Anglican priests make an annual pilgrimage to Glastonbury. Glastonbury Abbey owned much of the Southwest at one time and was at one time a great center of spirituality and learning. The elegant ruins of Glastonbury Abbey remind one that Henry VIII dissolved this and many other English monastries in the 1500s. The Abbey grounds are spectacular, and feature occasional concerts and theatre performances, with a choice little museum and gift shop, just 8 minutes walk from the house. The perfectly maintained Chalice Well, just 15 minutes walk from the house, is a beautiful English Garden which feeds the tired sou: visitors from around the world are drawn to this peaceful spot to meditate beside its ancient well.

The active 1 hour round trip walk to the Tor affords great views and lifts the spirits. Then come back down to the town for an English cup of tea with scones and clotted cream, or have a beer at the George and Pilgrim Hotel, formerly the Abbots Guest House built in 1456, now an English pub with a good chef for evening meals. There is a music store and many book stores to browse in, vegetarian restaurants, and alternative shops with a full range of spiritual fare: yoga meditation mats, statues of Hindu goddesses, Buddhas, Native American baskets and feathers, beautiful crystals, healing stones, handsome jewelry, fairy clothes. There are two supermarkets within minutes walk as well as an excellent health food store and organic vegetable store on the High Street. Information about the many concerts, political meetings, Transition Towns meetings or Goddesses sessions, as well as healing clinics, massages, and light therapy can be found in several of the shops in town. The NHS clinic supports alternative therapies in Glastonbury.

This charming small town proves to our children and ourselves that one can live without a car in a country town and still feel connected to the world. Wireless in the house lets one keep in touch or do research or write a novel. The light in the kitchen, the round table to sit around, the recently uncovered old well covered with solid blue glass, the old stone wall, the sky lights, and the terra cotta tiles on the kitchen floor gives a friendly atmosphere for eating and relaxing. The middle room has a piano and space for a string quartet to practice, and the front living room is good for hanging out to visit or read, next to a cozy fire place. Of the two double bedrooms on the first floor, one has a large table which can be a desk for writing. A full bath with shower on first floor, and a toilet on the ground floor. On the second floor is a large room with eves and a sky light, a double bed, and a sunken space which can be used as an additional single bedroom (with a roll-away bed), a children's play area, or as a meditation area. The french doors in the kitchen open onto a small private patio with a bench and small table and chairs. There are 2 bikes and easily accessible bike paths which lead to villages on the Levels and to the Ham Wall estimated to have been built at 3000 BC. Nearby village of Street has a large shopping mall, Clarks Village Mall. The small city of Wells is just 15 minutes by car, 5 miles, and has one of the great cathedrals of Europe. Bath is 45 minutes away with the famous Royal Crescent, Roman Baths museum, Pump Room, and newly opened spa with the hot baths.
