Elworth hamlet is a walker's paradise with footpaths in all directions. The Dorset Coast Path runs along the top of the hill above the hamlet and overlooks the Jurassic World Heritage Coast. In the nearby village of Abbotsbury you may visit the world famous Abbotsbury Swannery and Sub-tropical Gardens as well as the children's farm in the Great Tithe Barn and magical St. Catherine's chapel on the hilltop above the village. Abbotsbury was the site of a village during Bronze and Iron ages; Abbotsbury Castle above the village being an Iron Age hill fort. In the 11thC Edward the Confessor granted his steward Orc the village of Abbotsbury and surrounding lands. Orc built the Monestry of St. Peter and after his death ceded all of these lands to the Benedictan Abbey. The Abbey was demolished during the Dissolution of the Monestries in the time of King Henry V111 and was subsequently purchased by Sir Giles Strangways, the King Henry V111's commissioner. Abbotsbury and surrounding lands are still mostly owned by the descendents of Sir Giles to this very day, this fact ensuring that Abbotsbury remains unspoilt and full of historical interest.
Further afield, the local towns provide for many interests: Thomas Hardy's house 'Max Gate' can be seen in Dorchester and the cottage where he was born nearby. Dorchester also has a superb museum which houses finds from the excavation of Maiden Castle as well as other ancient sites. Also in Dorchester are The Old Crown Courts where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were tried (their museum is at nearby Puddletown), the Tutankhamen exhibition and the Dinosaur museum. In Weymouth you will find the Sea Life Centre specialising in local marine life. On the way to Portland is the Chesil Beach Centre where you may learn more about the marine life as well as take a trip on the Glass Bottom Boat. Portland with it's Olympic Sailing Academy is the place for water sports. The geographical wonder that is Lulworth cove also has a superb visitor centre and Lulworth castle holds medieval knight jousting days! Moving westwards, the old rope town of Bridport is enchanting with its many eclectic shops and vibrant Saturday bric-a-brac market and just beyond Bridport is the world famous fossil exhibtion at Charmouth and the town of Lyme Regis where the film 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' was made. Dorset really does have it all!
