Situated on historic, cobbled Gold Hill, C16th Grade 2 listed Updown Cottage abounds with beams and character which can only come with the passing of 400 years. The cottage sleeps six in four beautifully decorated and furnished bedrooms, complemented by an ensuite shower-room, a bathroom and a wetroom, supplied with Bromley natural toiletries.
Feel welcomed by the basket of breakfast goodies.
Indulge in the wealth of excellent locally produced food – venture out or make use of the kitchen, fully equipped for gourmet dining. We can also recommend a personal chef for a special occasion.
Relax by the fire, listening to the high quality audio-visual equipment or compose your own music on the baby grand piano inspired by the glorious views.
Explore the ancient Saxon town with its eclectic selection of stylish shops, delicatessens, restaurants, galleries and museums or stray further afield into the West Country.
Retire to bedrooms adorned with crisp, White Company, Egyptian cotton bed linen piled high with luxurious cushions.

Freesat TV The kitchen is equipped with every possible requirement from food processor to Aga dual-fuel oven. Dining facilities for 12. Can recommend a personal chef and caterers.

Gold Hill has been the location for many films and adverts, memorably for the 1970 Hovis "Boy on a Bicycle" advert from director, Ridley Scott.Shaftesbury is a charming town of independent shops, cafes, delis, restaurants and pubs and is surrounded by naturally beautiful countryside and stunning views.
It is within easy reach of the Jurassic coast and the ancient towns of Salisbury, Sherborne, Bath and Wells with their castles, cathedrals and abbeys. Stonehenge is a mere 30 minutes by car.

Continuing the musical tradition of Updown Cottage.
In 2006 we chanced upon a photo of Updown Cottage in The Sunday Times property section. Within 2 days we were viewing it and had completely fallen for its charm and the stunning views from the house and hillside garden. We spent the next 6 months renovating the cottage and the first piece of furniture to be delivered was a baby grand piano. We bought Updown from singer / songwriter Gordon Haskell and Simon sings regularly in semi-professional choirs so it was wonderful to feel that the tradition was continuing.
Shaftesbury is a welcoming and friendly place where everyone has time to chat and become involved in the community. Both here and in the rest of Dorset, there is an 'other-wordly' feel as if the cares of every day life have been left behind.
Mooching down the lanes, every turn brings a heart-lifting sight of spectacular views, beautiful cottages and the old England of green hedgerows and rolling hills. The local food producers are passionate about their creations and it would not be difficult to breakfast, coffee, lunch, tea and dine at a different wonderful location on every day of the week. We make it our duty to sample every place that we recommend to guests on a regular basis!
We are delighted that every guest at Updown Cottage leaves comments in the Visitors' Book echoing our own feelings about the cottage.
