Outstanding family home with stunning views down the Estuary in an area of outstanding natural beauty
Average Review Score 5 out of 5
Vacation Rental Description
Noss Mayo is a picturesque village on the Yealm estuary in The South Hams, an area of outstanding natural beauty at the southern edge of Devon. The Post House is at the heart of the village and is situated just above the popular Popes Quay, where a glass of something can be enjoyed from the nearby Swan Inn whilst watching (or participating) in crabbing, boating or swimming. In the immediate vicinity are three riverside pubs, in addition there are tennis courts and a play area within a short walk.

The house is on a walkers' route that takes you onto the stunning South West Coastal Path. A good circular walk will take you around the headland where on a clear day Eddystone Lighthouse can be seen, and if you are lucky seals below Warren Cottage. Falcons and Kestrels are regular sightings as well as the occasional Kite.

Cellars Beach is a popular BBQ location and can be accessed via an attractive 30 minute walk through woodlands or, if the tide is right, by sailing, rowing or boating down the estuary. At low tide stroll across the causeway to Newton Ferrers, where you will find a small general stores, post office and bakery (book your croissants the day before!), butchers, pharmacy and a charming tea room at the top of the village. During the Regatta (July/August) the two villages combine for hard fought competition between the communities, outsiders are welcome to participate.

The Post House stands proud at the head of Voss Creek with outstanding uninterrupted views both from the large open plan living/dining room or the sunny terrace down the river to the Yealm Estuary and the Pool Harbour. The House is notable for a major renovation completed April 2010 and is furnished to a very high standard. It is family friendly and can accommodate children of all ages.

Superb beaches are within 30 minutes including the Blue Flag beaches of Bigbury on Sea (with the world famous art deco hotel on Burgh Island), Blackpool Sands (award winning privately run beach in outstanding setting) and Challaborough (popular with surfers and regularly hosts top class competitions). Wembury is excellent for rock pooling and can be walked to along the coastal path from Noss Mayo via a pedestrian ferry.

Plymouth, with the National Marine Aquarium and historic Barbican (from where the Mayflower set off to America) is a 20 minute drive. Plymouth offers a range of seasonal events (including the Classic Boat Rally and British Firework Championships). In addition there is a theatre, Vue multiscreen cinema and dry ski slope.

A number of stately homes are in close proximity of Noss Mayo that host a range of all year round events:

Saltram House (National Trust) - Magnificent Georgian house with opulent Robert Adam interiors, gardens, follies and landscape parkland. Home of the Parkers for 300 years.
Buckland Abbey (NT) - 700 year old home of Elizabethan seafarers Drake and Grenville, in the beautiful Tavy Valley estate.
Cotehele (NT) - Tudor house with superb collections of textiles, armour and furniture, set in extensive (and fabulous) grounds. Within the estate is also a working watermill.
The Garden House - Great for teas and for wandering around a variety of gardens to get that little bit of inspiration!
Anthony House (NT) - Superb 18th century mansion set in parkland and fine gardens

For walkers, in addition to the coastal path and numerous local footpaths, South Dartmoor and the Abbots Way is a 20 minute drive where superb views can be obtained across the whole of the South Hams. The coast to coast walk taking in The Two Moors Way starts from nearby Wembury.

Day trips can be made to the Eden Project and Woodlands Theme Park (for younger children) as well as Paignton Zoo.

Otherwise just enjoy the environs of Noss Mayo with its friendly local community, socialising on Popes Quay or watching the world go by from the sunny terrace.

Several local 18 hole golf courses, including Staddon Heights at Plymouth commanding a spectacular view of the Sound, Bigbury and Thurlestone at 13 and 15 miles and St Mellion Golf and Country Club at 20 miles.

Thank you for a wonderful week.

House is perfect: comfortable, clean, wonderful views and perfect for any age. Coastal path walk is really lovely and doable with a buggy. Ship Inn has great food and we enjoyed drinks at the Swan whilst our son had fun crabbing. Hired a row boat from Phil [Carter] which was lots of fun. Tea Room at the Green [Newton Ferrers] was very enjoyable - delicious coffee, cake and fry up. Hope to come back again and will definitely recommend to friends and family. Thanks again - Kevin family - July 2011

Such a beautiful setting and a house to take full advantage of it. There was always going to be too much to do in one week...Two weeks were definitely needed. Would definitely recommend - Alexanders - June 2011

Great house, excellent location, beautiful views.

Weather allowed us to walk every day apart from one and what superb views there were. Managed to cover Noss, Newton Ferrers, Wembury, Heybrook Bay, Beacon Hill - all spectacular and varied. Food at the Ship was particularly good quality. The Old Wheel at Wembury had just been refurbished & we had a warm welcome & good food...there is good pub grub at The Swan. Many thanks - Benjamen & Friends - June 2011

This is a lovely house and so well equipped. We have had a brilliant time and would love to come back.

Noss Mayo is beautiful and there is so much to do for such a small place. The Butchers in Newton Ferrers has really good meat and local eggs and the croissants from the Post Office are nice too. We also had lovely food at The Ship!

Another wonderful stay at The Post House. Swimming(!) at Stoke Beach, Pimms and cider at The Swan, great food at The Ship, a day trip to Padstow and another to Woodlands where we all got drenched by the waterslides. Fabulous!!! Thank you - Mellor Clarks April 2011

Stunning weather, views and pasties. We'll be back. Children had never canoed before and were soon able to paddle like Steve Redgrave. Recommend takeaways from The Swan, pasties from Wembury and Newton Ferrer's butchers and the walk to Wembury taking the ferry (he doesn't charge as much as the sign says!). Record crabbing haul: 6. - Baileys - April 2011

"What a wonderful time we had. The Swan was about as festive as it is possible for a pub to be (bell ringing, chestnuts roasting, home made gingerbread men, mulled wine, pickled herring to celebrate Malkolms heritage and a Christmas quiz in which we made a very poor showing and came last!). The icy setting sparkled like a Christmas card, the churchbells chimed through the village on Christmas morning and the local community were very welcoming.

The Post House was a marvellous base..beds extremely comfortable..and to have a Christmas tree waiting for us was an extra special touch. We will happily recommend the venue." Kilner family, Christmas 2010

Sailing below the Post House South Hams Holiday Homes

We set up South Hams Holiday Homes in 2007 to offer homes with a difference. We are on the look out for properties that can offer a spectacular holiday either through its location or its amenities. The Post House is our first venture and after extensive renovation came on to the market in May 2010. Whilst unassuming on the exterior it met our criteria by offering outstanding views, and providing a great base for an all round family holiday. And it wasn't a plunge in the dark. We stayed there for 3 years with our family of four (that's them making the splash in the water below), saw the potential and decided to buy it. We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do.

A couple of local tips. The Swan Inn, "the local" will deliver meals to The Post House so you can enjoy a secluded evening on the terrace with your catering done for you!

The Ship Inn is more of a gastronomic pub but offers good value for money.

If dining at the Dolphin Inn in Newton Ferrers beware of the tide otherwise you could have a very muddy (or long) walk home!

Kitley House offers a number of entertainments that we have not explored (such as James Bond casino nights) we don't know if they are open to the general public.

Riverford have an extensive organic farm shop on the edge of Yealmpton (pronounced yam'ton) selling everything you need, including home made pies and cakes (they also have a butchers), 4 miles. If you have time an excursion to the Riverford Farm for a tour of where they produce the stuff is well worthwhile and the included lunch at the Field Kitchen will get your children hooked on vegetables!

However the main asset at Noss Mayo is the Estuary, providing a safe haven for mucking around, on or in the water, a short walk down some steps from The Post House.
