Vacation Rental Description
Our traditional old farm buildings lie tucked away in the North Devon Hills -in sight of Exmoor & a few miles from the sea.
The 18th c. farmhouse provides spacious self-catering accommodation, with beautiful views across a wooded valley (watch for red deer crossing the hillside!).
Freshly decorated & brought 'up to date', it still retains its period features & country cottage feel - & there really are roses and honeysuckle round the porch!
It has full central heating & most windows are double glazed, so although it provides light & airy accommodation, it is also warm and cosy, even in the depths of winter - & if the weather turns grey, you can toast your toes in front of cheery log fires in the woodburners in either of the 2 large Sitting/Dining rooms. The larger room has an antique dining table which comfortably sits 12 people. There are 2 bathrooms & upstairs are 4 pretty bedrooms of good size, with with lovely views.
A) Double & single
B) Double
C) 2 Singles
D) Double, Single, Bunk Beds (adult sized), Cotbed
(extra standard cot available)
At the front of the house is a walled garden with lawn & colourful shrubs & flowers. Being sheltered on all sides, it is a real sun trap.
At the rear is another larger garden with BBQ, picnic tables, flowerbeds and mature trees. A great place for supper/BBQs, as it catches the evening sun (and is close to the kitchen). Beyond the hedge is a meadow with a Willow Dome, plus informal Badminton/Volleyball Pitch.
Our Great Barn (inscribed 1778) has roof lights & offers studio space - with easels. There are also good ‘easel spots’ around the property. So bring your paints & pencils! (We hope to host special interest group holidays e.g. painting/drawing etc.)
Our property was originally part of Tidicombe Farm, whose pastureland surrounds us. A traditional hill farm - once owned by the National Trust as part of the Arlington Court estate. Over 20+ years we have transformed our 5 acre ‘island’ into flower gardens, woodland, meadow, orchard, vegetable & fruit areas. Paths meander through & provide for an enjoyable, peaceful stroll, especially when the evening sun is slanting across the gardens & through the trees.
There are seats to sit & enjoy the view, a book or just a cup of tea.
You may hear sheep, birds, the wind in the trees, occasionally a tractor - or the farmer losing his rag with his dog..... but there is no sound of traffic....
On a still day - or night - the silence is magical!
Likewise, on a clear night, switch off the lights, look up at the Milky Way arching over the farmyard - & watch for shooting stars.
A really dark sky is now rare in England & - with only the faintest glow over the hill from Barnstaple - many of our guests marvel at the brilliance of the night sky.
There are many local public footpaths in this beautiful area, including one which passes through our land - leading to a farm shop in one direction and a Pub in the other!
Despite Tidicombe's peaceful seclusion down a half-mile private paved lane, it is centrally situated for easy access to all of North Devon's many varied attractions.
Tidicombe was – and continues to be – our family home.
We want you to feel it is ‘yours’ during your stay - We love it when so many of our visitors say: “It’s been a home from home!”
Indeed many return year after year & have become old friends.
When we have visitors, the two of us live in the lower end of the white Cottage (see photograph), This was a traditional ‘Devon Longhouse’, where farmers once lived alongside their animals. (Our bedroom was the ‘hayloft’ & the farmer remembers his cows living in our kitchen!)
The Cottage adjoins but does not overlook the guest accommodation, so you have complete privacy, but we are on hand if you need assistance, want information on the local area or just feel like a chat!
