Vacation Rental Description
Lower Blackaton, with its two refurbished barns, is in the middle of the Dartmoor National Park, the biggest area of unspoilt countryside in S England. It is more than 400 years old but has been completely modernised with an oil fired Aga, central heating and two wood burning stoves. The house is a perfect centre for families or groups who enjoy nature and walking or simply want to relax in a peaceful environment. It has 5 bedrooms - two of these are family rooms - one is en suite. There are 3 bathrooms and 4 toilets. On the ground floor there is a sitting room lined with books and with a TV, DVD, CD, piano and array of games, a snug with TV, VHS, DVD and more books, and an entrance hall with yet more books. Guests have their own dedicated phone line and there is an honesty box for calls and extra baskets of logs. A utility room has a washing machine, deep freeze, drying machine and sink. The water supply comes from our own bore hole and passes through filters and a steriliser. It is tested by the council every year. Guests have the run of an extensive and informal garden where there is a swing, hammock, climbing ropes and ladders plus a BBQ area and garden seats. The gravel drive in front of the house has parking for up to 7 cars. Post is delivered and collected each day in the early afternoon. Groceries can be ordered on line and delivered to the door. The house has WiFi but to get a mobile signal you have to walk 300 yds up the hill.
There are 2 other buildings on this 1 acre site. Both are also Grade 2 listed. One has been refurbished as offices with a library, bathroom, kitchenette and spare bedroom, the other, the oldest of the group, has been the subject of an archaeological survey and is thought to have been in use for at least 600 years. Originally it housed both cattle and people under the same roof. This barn is currently being refurbished under the supervision of Dartmoor National Park conservation officers who call it 'an iconic Dartmoor building'. From Sept 2010 it will be available for group meetings or as overflow accommodation from the main house.
From Lower Blackaton there are superb walks including to the old tin workings and mediaeval village in the Challacombe valley and to Grimspound, an early Bronze Age settlement where the remains of 24 stone houses can still be seen. Widecombe (3 miles) has 2 pubs, (the Old Inn and the legendary Rugglestone) 2 cafes, several tourist shops and a post office.
The only rules at Lower Blackaton are:
1. No smoking in the house
2. Read any of the books and listen to any of the classical and opera CDs but don't take them away.
3. Shut the gate - otherwise the garden will be invaded by ponies, sheep or cattle.
