Fowey has a tradition dating back to the days of Queen Elizabeth I as an important naval port, with evidence or fortifications at the harbour entrance to prevent attacking fleets entering the harbour and causing mayhem. Barbary pirates were often seen lying in wait for stray craft to attack and take their Cornish crews to North Africa for slavery.
Fowey is a major sea port for the export of Cornish china clay and spetacular sights of bulk cargo carriers turning in the main pool are a sight to behold. Fowey does not have a fishing fleet, however the Yachting community is very strong and in the summer months it is hugely busy with sailing craft from around the globe.
Fowey has 2 main beaches within walking distance of Sideways Cottage a small tidal beach at Whitehouse and the beautiful Readymoney Beach a little further away, both are clean and fun to be on with gentle waves and a shallow walk into the water.
