Perfect area for walking or exploring and within easy travelling distance to Edinburgh. Mike and Pat have thought of everything and we can't wait to get back there! .
Melrose voted best scottish village by many of our guests
Melrose
Melrose ,"Gem o'Scotland", is a place of beauty & and an ideal short break destination. The town is situated at the foot of the famous Eildon hills which dominate the horizon. The north Eildon has the rampart remains of one of the largest iron age forts in Scotland. To the east lies Trimontium, one of the greatest discovered Roman forts, still echoing its past in the local museum.
The famous Melrose Abbey plays host to the crowning of the Melrose festival queen in June every year. This is a week of pomp and tradition. Festival week remembers various aspects of the towns history, with events such as - a ride out to check the boundaries of the town, a cycle ride, fancy dress, tour of ceremonies, crowning of the queen (dux) and festival ball. Most of the other Border towns have similar events during the summer months.
Also in June is the Melrose Book Festival. The event is getting bigger every year coaxing writers such as Michael Palin and Ian Rankin to come and give entertaining talks.
Melrose Sevens, in April, is second to none in the rugby calendar. Teams from all over the world compete for a place in history, to be crowned winners at the birthplace of the shortened game. It is a must for the rugby enthusiast.
The skirl of the bagpipes is to be heard en masse in August as the International Pipe Band Championship takes place in Melrose.
The Scottish Borders walking festival is held annualy first week in September.
Braveheart enthusiasts will appreciate the first ever statue of William Wallace - 31 feet high, built in 1814. Visit him after stopping to admire the countryside panorama at Scotts view.
This is horse country so why not get booked on a trek through the Border countryside. Thirlestane Castle Horse Trials take place in August. A wonderful setting and an entertaining day out.
Fishing and golf courses are in abundance here in the Borders. Local lochs and rivers cater for the trout fishers, while the river Tweed can offer some of the best salmon fishing at certain times of the year. . Why not simply go and see them jump the salmon ladders as they migrate upstream.
The golfer can purchase a Freedom of the Fairways ticket , entitling you to a golfing passport second to none. A host of clubs and course beckon through out the Borders but be warned remember the Scottish hills - no links courses here!
There are ten circular walks of historical and natural interest around Melrose, with cosy tea rooms or local hostelries to have something stronger after each one !
Hogmany is celebrated in the town market square. Tickets can be bought for a ceilidh in the town hall but you do not need tickets to come to the square for the bells. Friends and strangers are treated as one as everyone watches the fabulous firework display and waits for a new year to begin.
Melrose enjoys the quality of shops pubs and dining usually reserved for the city, it even has its own theatre! www.thewyndmelrose.com .Six fabulous top notch restaurants (all within 10 - 15mins walking distance of the cottage), serve up local produce and fine fare, not to mention quality wines.
