Vacation Rental Description

Our Burghead Cottage is a fisherman’s cottage built in 1857. Recently refurbished it provides bright and airy accommodation just a stone’s throw from the site of the old Pictish Fort, the harbour and the stunning sands of Roseisle Beach. Burghead is ideal, not just for a beach or dolphin spotting holiday, but also for touring the Malt Whisky and Castle trails, as well as longer day trips to places such as the Cairngorms National Park or Inverness.

Burghead itself is situated on a promontory, jutting out into the Moray Firth. The village is self contained, with three pubs within easy walking distance, all serving delicious local fish and chips (amongst other choices!), and other basic amenities including a small corner shop, newsagents and library.

We have just spent a week here and the location is fantastic. We have young twins and a large black lab. Walk out the cottage door and choose which direction, right for the rock pools, straight on for the old Pictish fort, left to walk down past the harbour and on to the beach and the forest.There is an info tower, open in the summer months which gives more background on the Pictish history, the local well and Telford's influence on building the harbour area. Recently opened, the Bothy is a great cafe, which also has some lovely gifts. There are 3 pubs in walking distance along with a small co-op and pharmacy. The cottage is also a good touring base, with a lot of great day trips as well: the ruins of Duffus Castle, the dinosaur footprints at Clashach Cove and quarry, Elgin Cathedral, Johnstons Cashmere visitor centre and shop, the Malt Whisky trail with it's numerous distilleries, castles galore whether lived in or ruined, Fort George, Inverness, the Cairngorms National Park and Royal Deeside, to name but a few. And there's always the chance of spotting some of the Moray Firth's resident bottlenose dolphins or the numerous seals if you are really lucky. We love it!

Attention to detail and providing a 'home-from-home' experience is our goal

My husband and I travelled extensively before settling in the North East of Scotland to run a guest house. With young twins (born May 2006) taking up more and more of our time, we wanted to stay in the tourism industry and help to promote the beautiful area we live in, so decided to re-focus on self catering cottages.

We love eating at The Duffus Inn, especially on one of their speciality Seafood evenings. Other places we frequent are The Crown & Anchor in Findhorn, The Beach Bar and Skerry Brae in Lossiemouth, The Harbour Inn in Burghead, Pattaya in Elgin.

With the twins, we love to visit the marine Aquarium, along the coast at MacDuff, the ruins of Duffus and Huntly castles as well as Elgin Cathedral and Synie Palace, Lossie East beach, Roseisle and Clashach Cove. And on wet days, The Playbarn at Llanbryde can keep under 12's amused for hours.

Without the twins we enjoy partaking in the odd dram or two, but please don't ask me to name a favourite, and Ballindalloch and Brodie castles are hard to beat. For a bit of shopping (without the husband!) I head to Johnstons or Brodie Countryfare.

I hope this gives you a flavour of the area, and hope you come and visit one day. And PS, the sunshines more than you would expect up here - that's why we have 2 RAF bases on our doorstep!
