Rudyard Kipling, born in 1865 went on to become a world renowned poet, novelist and short story writer. As well as this fateful lake, the Staffordshire village boasts excellent picnic spots, boating, walking and fishing opportunities as well as the steam railway. The thriving town of Leek is nearby and offers a variety of good pubs and restaurants as well as many antique shops. The beautiful Manifold Valley offers further walking opportunities with the "Manifold Trail" – an excellent route through superb scenery for walkers and cyclists.
