Skiing the Portes du Soleil:
Châtel is in the heart of the Franco-Swiss ski domain called the Portes du Soleil. The domain, one of the largest in Europe, covers 12 resorts:
8 French resorts including Châtel, Avoriaz, Morzine, Montriond, Les Gets , St Jean d’Aulps, Abondance and La Chapelle d'Abondance;
4 Swiss resorts: Champéry, Torgon, Morgins and Les Crosets-Val d’Illiez-Champoussin.
In all it has over 400 miles of ski slopes, well-served by 194 ski-lifts all accessible using a single, inclusive ski pass.
There are three primary ski areas:
1. Super Châtel – accessed via the gondola in the village.
2. Pre la Joux – this is located at the top (end) of the road from the chalet (approx 5 mins by bus).
3. Linga (pronounced Langa)– is 3 mins by bus from the chalet.
All ski areas are accessed via the free ski bus, which stops right in front of the chalet. You can ski back to the chalet from Linga.
Travel Options
- Travel Info: The easiest and quickest route is to follow the A1/E62 to Lausanne (signposted immediately you leave the airport).
Go around Lausanne on the A9 signposted Simplon, then back on the E62 (follow signs Vervey) past Montreux, keeping Lake Geneva on your right all the way around.
Continue on the motorway in the of direction Martigny and take the exit to St Triphon (5-10 mins after you leave the lake you should see a large smoking factory on your right). Follow the signs for Monthey, then take the road to Morgins, Portes du Soleil, you should immediately start climbing on a very windy road. Continue on this road through Morgins all the way to Chatel.o.
Continue down the road (from the border) and just past the cinemas (one each side of the road almost opposite each other) take the turning on the left (Route de Linga) opposite the Tourist Office.
Follow this road all the way to the bottom where you bear left and follow the road up through Linga (one of the main ski lifts) for about a mile or so.
The Chalet is on the right just past La Haut pension/hotel that sits directly on the bend of the road – as soon as you see it indicate right and slow down as the chalet is immediately right as you go round the bend.
