The Dunes de Guardamar which covers over 800 hectacres was planted in the late 1800s & early 1900s on sand which had been deposited by rhe river & the sea. It was planted to protect the town from the ingress of sand from the sea. Plants are still being grown to maintain these excellent woods in a plant nursery located near to the beach.
