El Cotillo Beaches
There are miles of excellent beaches to the south of this part of sunny Fuerteventura, and even on a busy day they are too big to be overcrowded. These beaches are popular with surfers, windsurfers and kiteboarders, and their colourful sails and kites only add to the scenery. The north beach incorporates several lagoons which provide safe bathing. The circular stone windbreaks (corralles) that are a common feature in El Cotillo surround these lagoons. This beach is popular with naturists because of the available shelter and safe bathing.
About El Cotillo
El Cotillo is a small, peaceful village at the northern end of Fuerteventura, on the west coast. The village is centred around the small new harbour that is mostly used by local fishermen. The old harbour is only a short walk to the north over the headland that separates the two. There are several bars and restaurants close to both harbours and the views from El Toston tower are particularly pleasing.
Getting to El Cotillo
The village is only 35 minutes from the airport. At the airport there several car hire companies but better prices may be obtained if you pre book. Alternatively, we can arrange transport at a cost which is slightly below the local taxi charge. El Cotillo is easily reached by public transport. It is a short journey from the busier town of Corralejo using the regular bus service. Puerto del Rosario is also easily reached, crossing Fuerteventura and rewards the traveller with some excellent views. If you are driving on the island, the main roads are good. There are also very picturesque routes along the coast, although these are sometimes easier to negotiate in a four wheel drive vehicle. The perfect destination for those looking for a quiet peaceful holiday. If tranquillity is your requirement then Cotillo is the place for you. Fuerteventura has an abundance of white sandy beaches and El Cotillo has some of the best.A short walk to the north of the village lie the famous lagoon beaches, perfect for swimming and very safe. To the south lies the Playa del Castillo, 2 kms long and used mainly for water sports, surfing, kite-surfing, wind-surfing etc. Further to the south lie the beaches of Playa del Ajibe and Playa del Aguila, both wild and remote. This area is truly the surfing and wind-surfing mecca of the island.El Cotillo is still a working fishing village and the local boats land most of their catch directly to the local restaurants, so you are guaranteed fresh fish! The village has a great selection of restaurants, with something to suit every taste and budget. There are numerous Spanish bars and a couple of English speaking bars including The Puerto Nuevo and Arenas Blancas.Surfing equipment and bicycles are available to rent locally.
