Vacation Rental Description
Cortijo la Suerte, a charming holiday home in the Alpujarras region of Andalucia in southern Spain is situated on the southern slopes of Spanish Sierra Nevada (Alpujarras). A 'cortijo' is a small farm, or farmhouse. 'Suerte' means luck, chance, fate or good fortune. It was our good fortune (or perhaps fate) to acquire this rustic farmhouse, and we hope that you will be fortunate enough to visit Cortijo la Suerte.Cortijo la Suerte provides comfort, simplicity and privacy, and gives our guests an authentic experience of Spanish rural life. It has stunning views, fruit trees, own spring water, about one acre of land. It is situated on the slopes near the village of Pitres. The nearest neighbours are farmers. The large swimming pool, jacuzzi, central heating in the living room and floor heating in the two main bedrooms are luxuries that add to the rural living style. Electricity is provided by a combination of solar panels and an ecological low noise generator. There are several possibilities for barbecue. The upper part of the property has a fruit garden. All the fruits of the season are yours to enjoy! (see the fruit calendar on our personal website) On the highest terrace is a large table for dining in the open air. The middle terrace is covered and it is the best place to stay on a hot summers day. The Jacuzzi is next to this terrace. There are outdoor chairs and tables. On the terrace next to the private swimming pool you can stay all day and there is ample possibility to take sunbaths. And last but not least: on the romantic terrace in front of the annex (with third bedroom) you can sit under the trees, away from the everything around you. There is plenty of place on the property to set up tents for the children or for camper vans for passing guests. The main beach at Salobrena is about 1 hour away. The Costa del Sol is a fairly well developed stretch of coastline, but there are also a number of less well known bays along protected stretches of coast. There are several golf possibilities nearby of which the golf course of Salobrena is the best known (1 hour drive). The ski resort of Sol y Nieve is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Andalucia. It is the most southerly ski resort in Europe and is small in comparison to other European resorts, even so, the resort hosted the 1996 World Ski Championships. The Sierra Nevada ski resort has numerous runs of varying difficulties to satisfy all skiing desires. Natural snow is supplemented by snow cannons on some runs. Being so far south, many skiers are pleasantly surprised to find that the air temperature is usually warmer than other resorts. The skiing season is December to April. The Sierra Nevada resort is less than a two hours drive from Cortijo La Suerte.Granada is the closest airport at 1 hour 30 minutes drive and is served by Ryanair (from Stansted and Liverpool) and by Monarch (from Gatwick). Malaga is served by most other airlines and is about 2hrs 20 minutes by car. You can reach us via public transport, but car hire is highly recommended and very easy to arrange. We will be happy to give advice.Distances Local villages of Pitres and Portugos are within walking distance and have a variety of shops, banks, bars and restaurants. Orgiva is the closest town of any significant size and is about 40 mins away. The city of Granada is one hour and fifteen minutes by car, and can be accessed by bus. The Alpujarras is a wonderful place for a holiday and for relaxing generally. It is ideal for walking and offers a vast range of options from high level snow line walks to casual hikes around the valley. It is a unique area, treasured by the Moors until they were expelled by the Christians in the 15th century, and still shows many signs of their occupation. Most notably the syle of Berber architecture, little white box houses with flat grey roofs supported by sturdy chestnut timbers.

Eleanor, Scotland We loved the area and the cortijo. Moss and Bramble - our dog and cat also enjoyed themselves especially the freedom of having so much space in a safe environment. We hope to return next year Shirley and John The house is a little treasure. The Alpujarras area was like stepping back in time with comparisons to places such as Peru or Chile Don't change anything with the house, its charm is in its location and simplicity. • Some people choose to use this area as a base for visiting the city of Granada and the magical Alhambra palace, or for day trips to the coast, but many more are content simply to relax and unwind, enjoying one of the most tranquil holiday spots in Europe. Every season has something special to offer in an area famed for its array of wild flora and fauna. Other activities you can pursue here include painting, horse riding, guided walks, cycling, sitting, thinking and mellowing. There are a variety of restaurants around including vegetarian establishments. There are local produce markets, bakeries, a supermarket, a travelling greengrocery van and a fish van to meet all needs. Once you are here, there's no need to leave.
Wherever you go you are accompanied by the sound of water, either from the racing Rio Trevelez and Rio Poqueira, or from the innumerable irrigation channels delivering water to the cultivated land. (Not so much in summer!)

    About Us

We are a Dutch couple, Bruno a retired engineer and Pauline, a qualified occupational therapist. We have travelled all over the world and now live in Holland, though we still travel a lot. Our children have settled in Holland, Australia and France and we have three grandchildren. We enjoy gardening, skiing, hiking in the mountains, tennis and field hockey. Pauline plays the violin in the Delfts Symphonie Orkest , a high quality amateur orchestra.

Ivan is the caretaker of the Cortijo. He is British and lives with his family in Mecina, a village in the valley below us. He will welcome you, show you around and help you when needed.

Loli is a young Spanish lady who does the cleaning and the laundry service.

Now we let our guests speak for us

    ...
We had an absolutely wonderful time at your cortijo – what a beautiful place! So peaceful! We didn’t encounter any problems with anything. Everything was explained in a very clear and helpful fashion in your House Book.
All in all 10 out of 10! We would certainly love to come back – if you’d have us!
    Iwona, England - October 2008

    ...
We have just returned from our holiday in Spain and would like to thank you so much for letting us stay in your wonderful cortijo. We had a terrific time: the place is delightful and was just what we were wanting. Definitely our best place ever! We would very much like to book again for next year!
    Eleanor, Scotland - September 2008

    ...
We stayed at Cortijo La Suerte for a week in February 2008 – the weather was wonderful, and just a few other tourists shared the walking trails with us. Snow still covered the Sierra Nevada, early spring growth painted bright green patches on the hillsides and almond trees blossomed in the valley and around the house.
The house itself is very secluded and private, with a fabulous view and pleasant places to sit and eat outside. It's quite comfortable, a little quirky (careful on the steps!), and ideal for a small group of friends or family who want a place to themselves. We enjoyed Pitres and other quaint villages nearby and especially recommend walking and driving in the surrounding countryside.
Pauline and James, Melbourne Australia - February 2008

    ...
I would like to congratulate you on having such a nice place in such a wonderful location. We had a thoroughly relaxing week, with great weather.
    Louise - September 2006

    ...
Just to say thank you for such a lovely restful holiday. We loved the area and the cortijo. Moss and Bramble - our dog and cat also enjoyed themselves especially the freedom of having so much space in a safe environment. We hope to return next year for a holiday and I have passed your details on to a number of people.
Shirley and John - August 2006

    ...
Just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed staying at La Suerte. The house is a little treasure. It was a pleasure getting away from the normal frantic pace of modern life. The Alpujarras area was like stepping back in time with comparisons to places such as Peru or Chile!! There were several other marvellous experiences from our time there and I could go on and on.
Don't change anything with the house, its charm is in its location and simplicity.
Elaine and Mark - September 2005
