The location is ideal for touring the Los Alcornocales (Cork oak forests) National Park which is well known for its flora and fauna and is popular with birdwatchers and walkers. Alcalá de los Gazules is a typical mountain village with a long and interesting history, spanning many centuries. It was declared a historic and artistic site in 1984 and has many interesting buildings, including the main church of San Jorge, built in the XVII century on the site of the Moslem mosque. Nearby is an old convent, which is now used as a school. The ruins of a castle which was built in Roman times and destroyed by the French are also close to the church.
Its people are friendly and welcoming and around the 3 main squares and within the maze of narrow alleyways and steps there are many individual shops, supermarkets, tapas bars and restaurants. You will find a children's playground behind the largest square.
There is a permanent market which opens daily, selling fresh local produce.
