Early retirement caused us to rethink our priorities in the late 1990s and we decided to move to the sun. We had a preference for France as we love the cuisine and the countryside in the southwest (and Jane speaks the language) but it was just not warm enough in winter, so 1999 found us house-hunting in Andalucía. We avoided all the built-up bits and fell in love with the area round Mojácar in eastern Almería, where we completely lost our hearts to a wonderful piece of land in the hills 30 minutes inland.
It took nearly 2 years to get permission to build on this rural land and Terry cannot sit still for even four minute. Our small house in Mojácar did not need any work, so to keep him busy we bought a very large house in need of major updating, both inside and out. Four bedrooms, two kitchens, a complete re-plumb and rewire, swimming pool and covered terrace, not to mention a major overhaul of the garden, took us the best part of five years, but the Las Tortugas project was finally completed in 2006.
Unfortunately our new house was still not ready, so we stayed at Las Tortugas, which we used to run as a B&B, until 2007. By then we had missed the peak of the market for selling it, but to be truthful the family love it so much, and we put so much of ourselves into it, that we are quite happy to keep it and let it for holidays.
Jane has now mastered the language and we find that most of our peak holiday guests come from France and Spain although we are usually booked out during the half term breaks and other minor holidays with visitors from the UK. Everyone appreciates that we have been careful to leave the house as well equipped (particularly in the kitchens) as when we lived there ourselves.
We are now busy with B&B in our new house in Bédar as well as looking after our guests at Las Tortugas.
Retirement? You must be joking!!
